We got a call last night to say that my MIL is in hospital. She is almost 84 and has ischemic heart disease and Asthma. She has been on warfarin for over 20 years now. Her latest blood tests showed an INR of 1.2 and there seems to be a problem with her liver results (from blood test). I know some people with mech valves have thrown clots at 1.2, would it be any different for someone who doesn't have valve problems?

Also, we don't know what the Liver results might indicate. It is about 3 hours drive to the hospital and we were going to go tomorrow, but we've just found out that the hospital has the "Winter Vomiting Bug" and they are not allowing visitors. They told my husband that only patients "at deaths door" were allowed visitors! I know it means at least that she is not in that category but it's awful to think of her in there without family or friends :(

Maureen,
I'm sorry that I don't know the answer to your INR question; however I wanted you to know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
Are you able to talk to her via phone?
Godspeed,
Mary

the bug must be a really bad one if they are keeping you out. I am sure they are protecting your MIL to the nth degree. Send her cards, phone messages, tell them to assure her that you are checking in daily but they won't let you visit.

I can't answer the question you have, either. My bro has been on coumadin for years to prevent stroke and that they try to keep him in range. I think it's around 2.5 - 3.

The hospital are still not allowing visitors today (Sunday) and she's been there since Thursday :( There are a number of hospitals around the country who have the "Winter Vomiting Bug", it is highly contagious. One hospital in Dublin has over 100 staff out sick with it as well as having extra patients to care for. I can understand that by restricting visiting they are trying to prevent the spread of the bug to the wider community, but it is awful not being able to see her. They have put a phone by the bed so at least we can speak to her now.

Saturday, she became quite ill and an x-ray showed a bowel obstruction. She is to have another x-ray this evening and after this they will decide whether or not to operate. The hospital have said that they may allow us in if she is to be operated on.

Maureen-

How terrible not to be able to visit. She sure could use the comfort of family at this time.

I will keep her in my prayers and thoughts.
