Hi guys,
My mom (she just joined the site and her name is Lorraine1234...we are creative ) and I just met with Dr. Krieger at NY Presbyterian hospital and we now have a date (and a doc) for the big surgery. She is going to get her mitral and aortic valves replaced. She is in the radiation damage club, and it was really comforting to hear Dr. Krieger say that he has a lot of experience with radiated hearts and is prepared for any added complications or technical difficulties that might arise as a result of that.
So we are gearing up for the surgery. Her pulmonary function tests came back indicating that she does have some lung damage from the radiation, but overall her pulmonary functioning is okay (not awesome, but not terrible). Her carotid doppler showed that her carotid artery is 50% blocked (due to scarring from radiation) but Dr. Krieger said it shouldn't be an issue for the surgery.
We are glad to have found Dr. Krieger. We got a 1st opinion from a doc who didn't seem to think that her status as a radiation damaged patient was that big of a deal for the surgery. Thanks to all the info and help from you guys, we knew that it was and found someone who has a lot of experience with patients like her and we feel a lot better about the whole thing.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much.
