Does anyone here (ladies, obviously) suffer from mittelschmerz (painful ovulation)? Is there anything to be concerned about with this and being on warfarin? This is why I ask:

1) I've been on BCP for 12 years, almost continuously. So I haven't really ovulated in a good long time.

2) I was switched to a progesterone-only BCP when I got my mechanical valve 6 years ago because of the concern over blood clots. A couple of times I had pain, but didn't connect them to my cycle until later.

3) When I finally realized the pain could be associated with my cycle, I was in the ER with an ovarian cyst that had burst. Due to the warfarin, the bleeding from the cyst did not stop and I had to have emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and got 4 units of blood transfused. I was then put back on the mixed BCP and have not ovulated since.

4) We are in the process of trying to cycle with a surrogate to have a baby. We are in the testing phase and the RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) had me come off of my BCP to make sure I would produce the eggs necessary for cycling. Today I started experiencing pain and realized it is the right time to be ovulation pain.

5) I read online (I know, a dangerous thing to do) this snippet from WebMD:
"As an egg develops in the ovary, it is surrounded by follicular fluid. During ovulation, the egg and the fluid, as well as some blood, are released from the ovary. While the exact cause of mittelschmerz is unknown, it is believed that the fluid or blood may irritate the lining of the abdominal cavity, causing pain. The pain goes away once the body absorbs the fluid or blood."

So my question is, will this become a huge problem, like the cyst, because of my being on warfarin? Could the blood they refer to wind up not stopping? Or am I just being overly paranoid? I wouldn't worry so much if it weren't for my previous experience! Someone please ease my anxiety!

Thanks in advance.

I had mittelschmerz to one degree or another most of my adult life (until the last few years). It was how I got pregnant so quickly when we decided to have our kids - I knew exactly what day I was ovulating. I never had any issues with warfarin (but I've burned through a warehouse of heating pads - it was the only thing that seemed to help.)

I should also add that I've had 3 uterine ultrasounds in the last 3 years to keep an eye on fibroids. They always reported my ovaries looking healthy and normal with no scarring or malformation. So the mittelschmertz didn't appear to affect them. I would think if bleeding had been an issue that I didn't know about that it would have been seen (after so many years) in the US's.

I wish I'd known I was going to be dealing with this... We don't have a heating pad (haven't needed one), but I sure wish I had one now!

Thanks for letting me know it's possible to live with this and NOT have a bleeding problem. It's only a fear of mine because of the major issue I had 5 years ago. God, I don't want to repeat that experience!

Whew! The pain was gone when I woke up this morning. Thank goodness! I guess I freaked out my husband more than I realized. This morning he told me he was going to keep his cell phone on him all day at work so that if I had a problem I could call him. I told him now that the pain has passed I'm fairly certain I'm in the clear. I really need to stop getting myself so worked up about these things!

I have had this ever since I can remember and I too use heat and take Naprogesic to ease the pain which can be so bad that I cant move. Period pain is nothing compared to this stuff :(...The Naprogesic works in about 20-30 minutes ...I dont know what it is called in the USA the ingredients are listed as Naproxen sodium. One pill doesnt have any noticeable effect on INR. I had a cyst that burst about 20 years ago. I went to the ER and spent the night in hospital...in hindsight it was probably the start of this Mittleschmertz.
