I was wondering if anyone knew how mechanical heart valves are implanted. I have a good idea of the surgery involved, but in what orientation is the valve usually implanted? Say for a bileaflet mitral valve replacement, is the valve implanted so that when opening, one leaf opens toward the anterior of the body and one towards the posterior? Or does one leaf open towards the left half of the body and one towards the right? And the same for a tilting disc valve!

If you can help or if you know of a useful website that might help I would appreciate it.

Regards,
