BIGHEARTED

Hi - Yesterday I had my annual checkup for aortic aneurysm and bicuspid aortic valve. I had an MRI - Preliminary results 4.6 - Yeah!!! And an echo. I don't have the results from the echo yet, but the technician said something very strange to me and I was wondering if anyone ever heard of it. I had already had my appt. with the cardiologist, or I would have asked him. The technician told me he could see the repair (he used a long word that I don't remember) on my mitral valve. I was shocked because I have never had any type of heart surgery and never had a repair on my mitral valve. Then he said "Oh, then you have congenital double orifice mitral valve." I have never heard of such a thing and wonder if anyone else has. Thanks for any information you can give me. Leny

Sorry, can't help on that one. Definitely worth a call to the cardio. For one thing, the tech should probably have said nothing. They can oversstep their boundaries some with casual remarks like that.

We'll be curious, so let us know what the cardio says. Do not hesitate to call his/her office today. They definitely need to explain this to you so it won't cause you any anxiety or concern. Be sure to specify what you want to know and why (that the echo tech mentioned a condition you were unfamiliar with) so that they'll actually call you back on a friday! :D

At a guess...

At a guess...

I've seen a repair procedure where they stitch together the top and bottom of a valve, turning the orifice from an "O" shape into a figure 8. I think it's a treatment for regurgitation?

Clearly your valve has naturally grown into this shape!

Hi Marguerite - I haven't been around much lately so I just found out about your surgery today. I hope you are doing well. My cardio doesn't have office hours today so I won't be calling him. You are right, the technician should not have said anything. I will get the echo results in a few days - I'm wondering if it will say anything. He could have just misinterpreted what he was seeing too. The only thing I can find on the internet is mitral valve prolapse. Leny

Leny:

I did a search for double orifice mitral valve and saw that it sometimes accompanies other heart defects, such as bicuspid aortic valve.

I agree with Marguerite -- the technician should have said nothing.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks to all who responded. I did go on the internet and found quite a bit about double orifice mitral valve. Sounds like it is rare, but not too serious, and usually is found with other congential defects. Makes sense as I have a BCV also. So I will just sit tight for now. But I will be sure to ask my cardiologist the next visit. Thanks again. I remain in the waiting room.
