Hello everyone, I’m new here. I’m 45 female, had been diagnosed mitral stenosis since 20 due to the rheumatic fever. I was doing well until last month, my mitral area is only 0.8 cm2 significant decreased compared 15months ago. I’m facing either to have Percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty, commissurotomy or replacement.

I had TEE last week, my cardiologist told me that my mitral valve has not been calcified; and the valve’s morphology is still good to have the balloon valvuloplasty. It is really good news for me, but my cardiologist could not recommend any of good Interventional cardiologists in my area (SF bay area).

Is there any one here had mitral balloon valvuloplasty before? Any suggestions and advises are welcome. At this point, I’m willing to travel anywhere if there is good doctor can handle my case.

Thank you!

I'm thinking we have had a (very) few members who had valvuloplasties.
Do a Search on VR.org for keyword "valvuloplasty". Scroll down to the lower left box and select "Any Date"
There is another word that is also used for that procedure but it escapes me at the moment.
One of our primary guidelines is to find a Doctor with considerable Experience (and a good track record)
performing the procedure You will need.

Member BVDR from NC knows something about them (she is a former Nurse).
(You can find the Member's List under "Community" on the 'red line' at the top of the page).

Have you contacted anyone at Stadford University? That is one of the Top Heart Hospitals in the nation.

I'm thinking that an Effective Mitral Valve Area of 0.8 would be classified as Severe and in need to 'attention'.
It would be wise to also investigate Valve Options (see the Valve Selection Forum) 'just in case' the valvuloplasty
is not successful or cannot be performed for some reason.

I have spent a lot of time on this site and get a lot of information. Thank you!

Yes, my MS is classified as severe, it needs attention now.
I’m definitely considering other option -- a surgery repair or replace even it is really scared me at beginning. Hope I could get it fixed before this summer.
I’m also studying the valve section, currently, I’m totally getting sold out on On-x, but I definitely need do more research on it.

By the way, I met my cardiologist this afternoon. He gave me a name who he thinks that does most PBMV in the states, and the doctor is Dr. Igor Palacios at Mass General Hospital. I asked him if he were in my position what he would do. He said he would go to Boston. So my cardiologist will mail my TEE and TTE to Dr. Palacios to verify if I’m a good candidate for Balloon valvuloplasty.
In the mean time, I scheduled an appointment at Stanford with Dr. Alan Yeong, whom I think does the most aortic valve valvuloplasty at stanford, but he might not has done many cases on mitral valve simply because of lack of the patients.
I will post the result after I meet Dr. Yeong.

Does anyone here know Dr. Palacios at Mass General Hospital?

Any suggestions on surgeons at SF bay area? I know Dr. Miller has very good reputation. And Dr. Ramin Beygui is also very good

Hello Dancing,

Dr. Alan Yeong at Stanford is good. He did this for my wife in 2007 march(3 yrs back).she was 29 yrs of age when she under gone this procedure.

My wife had mitral stenosis Dr's figured out this during her 9th month of her pregnancy. She delivered my son in ICU ( C- Section). After 3-4 weeks of my son birth she had this mitral balloon valvuloplasty done by Dr. Alan Yeong at Stanford. He is good. He is the experienced (especially on baloon valuloplasy) doctor to do this in Bay area. We waited like 2-3 weeks to get his appointment.

If any question feel free to post a message. I am MORE than happy to help you on any questions you have via mails or phones.

You will be fine ..

Thanks,
-Raj..
