a number puzzle...
missed this as part of 'cool' tricks in my undergrad number theory course....

If you jumble a number and take the difference from the original the result is divisible by 9. So all the digits add up to a multiple of 9. If you want to guess the digit just add up the numbers left and figure out the smallest number to the next multiple of 9. Thats the missing digit.

e.g.:

8754 - 5784 = 2970
since you cant choose the 0 -- say you choose 2 then what left is 970 ( the last jumble dosent affect anything ) 9+7+0=16 is 2 less than 18 ( the next multiple of 9 ) so the answer is 2.

I spent 4 years studying math ( including number theory one of my favorite subjects ) in college .....

Awe!

Awe!

OH NO now that it is explained the fun is gone!! Some things are better left unknown. It's more fun that way!! LOL I would have never figured it out!

Burair: I do admire your mathematical skills. You did remove some the mystigue of such games though. No problem. It's fun, for once, knowing how "they did that."

Sorry -- I wanted to tell you all last night and had to really exert a lot of willpower not to blow the whistle -- felt almost moral repugnance about them using such an elementary puzzle to dupe people -- puritanical streak probably.... ;)

guess the 7-up people have to do better at least in this community...

Well, I think it is amazing that you can figure that out. I could never remember the explanation any way LOL, so I'll still enjoy the puzzle!
