Hi, everyone! Whenever I wonder about something, I always know I can get some fantastic information from wisdom and experience here--even though I always seem to have "off the wall" type questions. Does anyone know what the effect could be from exposure, long term or short term, to mildew and/or mold? We have had a lot of rain here in sunny FL lately and discovered a leak that has created just such a situation. Any thoughts--of course, other than getting it fixed--that has to be done--I just don't know what it could have insidiously done in the meantime and don't know how long-term it may have been, but probably has been going on for a while, just not noticeable. Thanks, "Susan of the gas-mask" :(

Susan,
I don't think we are any more at risk for something like that then everyone else but like you said get it fixed and clean up the mold.

As far as your heart valve, probably nothing to worry about. Now your lungs on the other hand, can be a whole different story. It's not proven, but Black mold (StachyBotrys Atra) has been associated with Pulmonary Hemosiderosis or lung hemorrhaging.

Best advice, get it cleaned up and seal the leak. It's not worth the risk. Check out this article from the CDC:
