I am not sure if there has been a poll in the past on this but a recent thread prompted me to start this poll. Please read the choices carefully as they are very similar and deal with coumadin/no coumadin and various period changes. I have decided to make it a private poll so members would be comfortable answering without being identified. Please don't respond if it is not applicable to you as I really would like an accurate poll.
Thanks for your help.

I voted for "not changed and on Coumadin". However, it has changed in the last few years and has gotten heavier. Since the first 12 years were fine, I'm assuming this change is due to the approach of menopause and not the result of Coumadin.

Birth control and bleeding

Birth control and bleeding

I use the Ortho Evra patch and it seems this decreases menstrual bleeding before and after my surgery (+coumadin). Some docs get a bit nervous about using OC's and coumadin at the same time since in theory progesterone-based hormonal contraceptives increase the risk of clots in 'normal' women (jeez, who are they??). But since the coumadin is titrated to the proper INR, my OB/GYN deduced there's no added risk. My cariologist hasn't even mentioned any issues with taking the two combined.

Anyhow, using the patch works for me. Also reduces my monthly bleeding to only once every three months and I REALLY like that.

Hi, Patty,
I just went through this (choosing a pill) with my OB/GYN. Isn't it estrogen-based pills that pose the risk for clots? She indicated to me that she would put me on a progesterone only pill with little risk of clotting. Just curious. BTW, glad the patch is working so well for you.

Can you add one perhaps terming it "hysterectomy due to coumadin" but it was a good thing.

Kathleen,
Was that because coumadin made things so bad you needed a hysterectomy to make life "livable" or was it a life threatening issue? I am asking so I know how to word it. I had a hysterectomy because my periods (which were bad before coumadin) got so bad after my quality of life was compromised. You can send me a PM if you prefer not to divulge too much on a public forum.

Since my surgery in 07 (coumadin) I am have 2 periods monthly HEAVY Bleeding. Has anyone had the the procedure where they scar your uterus to prohibit menstruating?

I had a hysterectomy due to the issues after I started Coumadin. My period got to where it never really stopped, and often would be so heavy I would be in the bathroom practically constantly. I was anemic due to the loss of blood. At that time, 8 years ago, the Hematologist who consulted with my Gynecologist didn't think the Ablation would solve my problem. After that procedure, you might have light periods, and he felt that any level of bleeding could cause issues with Coumadin.

It seems like there are people on this site who had the procedure and it was successful.

I know a non-Coumadin user who had the procedure about 5 years ago. She hasn't had a period since.

You might want to start a new thread because sometimes people have a tendency to ignore the older threads, especially if they are polls, thinking they've already responded.

I know I have already mentioned this in another post, but I have had the IUD for nearly 2 years now without a period- just some spotting. Since being on coumadin, I have spotted once for a day, and I was worried that that would be more common now due to coumadin. I guess anything is better than the heavy flow of a period on coumadin. That is exactly why my OB and my PA told me to stay on the IUD- they thought it was a great idea. I would recommend it - very easy- only need to think about it once every 5 years. I figure if I need to do this until i am 50- that is only 4 or 5 more change-outs!
but wait- how would I even know that i was going through menapause if i am on the IUD??? HMMMM- probably wait and see i guess, i have time.

Yes...its called Uterine Ablation...its wonderful and I got great results...PM me if you want to know the intimate details...I saw a Gynecologist and she did it for me in a Day-surgery procedure...

I can relate to this, as before I had a hysterectomy two years ago, my periods were pretty much the same experience as Lisa describes.
I wasn't on Warfarin all the time before my OHS but on the occasions that I was, it (Warfarin) made my periods worse than they already were (and they were already VERY HEAVY), which was horrific - hardly able to leave the house on the first 3 days of the cycle etc...

I voted for "heavier on coumadin" because my periods were lasting for between 3 and 4 months at a time and were so heavy I couldn't go anywhere.

However, I had an endometrial ablation last November and it's the best thing I've done since my surgery - it has CHANGED MY LIFE!!

I now no longer have any periods at all and I am able to live a more normal life that doesn't mean I'm tied to the bathroom all the time. I can't recommend this procedure highly enough!

Hope this helps

Regards, Misty
