So after all this is over, do you think that I will be on new meds when I get home from the hospital? I am already on Coumadin so that wont count. I was just wondering also about rejection of the mechanical valve. Is that a possibility also?

:)

You probably can't have an immune rejection response to a mechanical valve. It's inert. Never heard of one.

Meds? oh yeah. You'll be on pain meds, and quite possibly amiodarone or dronedarone, and beta blockers, and, and, and depending upon what all you have done and what your underlying issues are - like afib, etc. In addition to the coumadin.

I wasn't taking any meds before surgery, and came home on sooo many! It made me freak out. but I am slowly getting use to it. I am on a beta blocker, amiodarone, synthoroid, coumadin, and full dose aspirin every day. It can be shocking to go from nothing at all to all these meds you have to keep up with.....taking them, making sure you have a RX when you need it, and getting it filled before you run out. I know some people have dealt with this for years and it seems like no big deal, but its all new to me.

according to my discharge sheet, i got:

1. tramadol 50 mg for two weeks (pain killer)
2. pantocid 40 mg for two weeks (gastro reflux)
3. haemup for one month (haemoglobin)
4. acitrom 4mg for three months (~warfarin)
5. codeine throat syrup as needed (coughing hurts)
6. 81 mg aspirin

was taken off the beta blockers and ace inhibitors from pre-surgery

Hi Debbi -

Post-op, I was shocked at how many pills I had to take at first, all day long, throughout the day.

I had to write down a complicated little schedule to get them all taken properly: empty stomach, after eating; and spaced out properly: twice daily, 4x daily, etc. The number of pills reduced, however, and currently I only have to take three pills.

I don't know if you've read anything here about a plastice breathing exercise machine called a spirometer, but if your surgeon gives you one and instructs you to use it after your surgery, be sure and use it exactly as he tells you to. It can help prevent you from having to take more pills down the line.

Best wishes :) .

I had Coumadin, pain meds, and iron pills when I first came home. The iron pills were for about a month and the pain meds were as needed, but I rarely took them. I didn't get blood pressure medicine until sometime later.

When you are asking about new meds, are you talking about long term meds, or things like pain pills ect?

and no there arent't rejection issues with mechanical valves.
