I wonder if anyone here has found meditation useful in navigating the waiting period for the operation and how it has helped them. My naturopath has strongly urged it.

The weeks/days before surgery are the hardest of all. Just about everyone who faces the surgery is understandably apprehensive. We have not had anybody that I can recall who has used meditation, but meditation is certainly know to calm one, so you may just want to try it. If it helps, please tell us so that we can include it in words for future members. God bless

I think Medtronic of Borg practices meditation, and is quite expert on it. You could send him a Private Message. I'm sure he'd love to speak with you about it. I kinda wish he would post some about beginning meditation.

William,
I would also strongly recommend meditation. In order to prepare for my surgery, I went into a year of "training". Yoga, Meditation, and Walking. I took university classes in Yoga 4 times a week and continue to this day. I also took classes in Meditation -- but I feel that I failed the course. I just couldn't get into it the way the others in my class did -- but the fault was mine and I continue to be a believer.
(Perhaps I was expecting too much.)
Also prior to the surgery I procured the "Guided Imagery" CD which is either related to meditation, or are a form of meditation. I was "wired" to listen to the CD while I was waiting surgery, and, I am told, during surgery. CCF seems to believe in it, and I think it helped. I got through it, so it must have helped.
Best wishes,
Don

hi bill!
those guided imagery tapes by diane tusek are amazing. she has such a soothing voice. i still use them when i have trouble sleeping. they really help me "shift gears".
joey used them for awhile in the hospital. i would highly recommend them. you can read about them at:

about meditation, i did TM for many years while in college and it helped me feel very "centered" and calm. i guess kind of what yoga would do for you.
i do remember, however, that it took some time before i felt the effects of the meditation.
whatever you decide to do, please let us know how it worked.
wishing you all the best. be well, sylvia

guided imagery, relaxation

guided imagery, relaxation

I did a lot of guided imagery before and the two weeks after my surgery. It helped me prepare a lot, and calm down. The day of surgery I was able to recall all the soothing images and it really helped me stay calm. Afterwards, I found it very helpful in reducing and even eliminating pain (I still used pain meds as well and would highly reccomend them too). The guided tapes (with voices that walk you through the relaxation are helpful) but I would also reccomend just the relaxation music tapes/discs with instrumentals once you get comfortable doing the relaxation on your own.

Guided Imagery Tapes

The heart surgeons office at Inova Fairfax issue Diane Tuseks Guided Imagery tapes free of charge a couple of weeks before the surgery. There is a tape with "talk" and music and one with music only. I'm not sure why, but the day of surgery they ask you to come wired with music only. Worked for me both pre and post op. Four years later I still use the tapes occasionally for insomnia.

I'm no expert on meditation or guided imagery, but I did purchase one of Diane's CDs about a week ago to see if it would help me get thru some medication side effects. I was amazed at the results. The relief does not last forever, but mine gave me at least an hour of blessed relief. At the very least, you will get the most relaxing 20 minute vacation you have ever had, and I found it quite easy to slip into that relaxed mode. This particular technique has been used at some very prestigous medical facilities, so don't for a moment think it is hocus-pocus. Don't know how it works, but it does. I have not used it during a medical procedure, but will probably try it next in the dentist's chair.

Meditation

Meditation

Bill,
I am a Buddhist and have practiced many forms. Moving upwards in skill slowely over many years. It has helped me in so many ways. If you or any one has questions about meditation please ask. As for G.Imagery , I was trained at the University of Hawaii when becoming a nurse. They focus a lot on it, what it can do and what it can not. I was lucky to have been trained in both medicines (east and west).

So please let me know what you may whant to know.
