Hi all,

Before surgery I had a bunch of dental work done which included getting two back lower teeth crowned (next to each other). I ended up still having pain back there and went to an endodontist. He did a root canal on one tooth and put the crowns (which are molded together) back on with temp cement in case the other tooth needed canaling later. Last night while eating dinner the crown(s) came off. I'm hoping to see a dentist here in NC tomorrow to get the crown(s) cemented back on.

Now that I got all that out I'll get to my question. I have my Amoxicillin with me, I'm just wondering if I should start medicating now (since I have 2 "stubs" exposed), or wait until my normal 1hr before I see the dentist?

Any opinions out there?

Hi Bryan...

Sorry you are having those pesky concerns. Have a few canals and crowns myself. Since you already had the root canal...I doubt there is much there to get infected. They seal off the root canal and that basically kills off the root section. Otherwise, you would be in too much pain with a missing crown.

I would run out to the pharmacy and purchase some dental adhesive. Have seen it in Wal Mart in the dental section. You can stick your crowns back in place on a temporary basis until you see the dentist. If it were me...I would just stick to my pre-meds until my dentist determined otherwise.

Good luck to you.

I agree. They seal the teeth when they build in the pins that the crowns attach to.

Unless you have reason to believe the uncanaled tooth has been otherwise compromised, I don't think medicating now would provide any benefit. In fact, if the dentist doesn't poke into the gums, it's pointless anyway.

I just had a bridge done in five visits. Aside from the first visit for the setup of one new crown, she never touched the gums. Still, she insisted on the premed for each visit. My intestinal flora have been in a nasty state of uproar ever since. And, despite what some may tell you, live-culture yogurt does not replace all the good flora and fauna you kill off with that big, 2gm dose, especially if used multiple times in succession. It can take months to get things normalized again, and be very painful.

Best wishes,

Thanks guys!

Thanks guys!

I think I'm going to try the dental adhesive. If that works I should be ok until I get back to Nashville in about 10 days. Then I will call my dentist and tell him that "HIS" crown fell out. :D If the dental adhesive works that might also save me around 100.00 and a couple of hours in a waiting room tomorrow. It's not painful, only temperature sensitive. It just seems that everything that "pops up" like this for the first time after surgery is something you wonder if you should treat differently than you did before surgery.

Thanks!

Bryan,
I did the dental adhesive when one of my temp crowns came off. Worked just fine. Just don't chew a lot on that side.

How far back are your teeth? I had a gold crown for many years in far back bottom..Got tired of it being loose... Peanut, ect getting under it..Finally, after my surgery, I told my dentist to take it out..and he said, the one next to it too. so, I have a little gap in bottom right side. :p I can still chew :p And smile, and no one can see I'm missing my 2 back teeth. :p Beats the heck out of root canals, ect... Still have all my other pearly whites. :D Bonnie

Hi Bonnie!

It's the last two on the bottom left...it's my chewing teeth! :D My mom grilled a wonderful london broil last night and that's what did the damage. I think it was getting loose because I noticed a little different sensation a couple of weeks ago, but it went away. After spending all that money on 2 crowns and a root canal those suckers are staying...lol. I just need to get them to use a permanent cement when they put them back on. The endodontist thought I might need the other tooth canaled if I still had pain after he did the one he was sure needed it (that's why he used temp cement). I haven't had any pain since then so it's time to use the "super glue" on them this time. :D

I don't think it's a good idea to "pre-medicate" now just because the crown came loose/off.

Generally the prophylaxis is to prevent bacteria that can get REALLY stirred up during a a dental visit from entering the blood stream and messing with your heart. If you're not bleeding exccessively then it really shouldn't be an issue now, and even then, natural bleeding can prevent bacteria fromgetting into the blood stream, it's when tools with the bacteria on them (after they've been stuck in your mouth, we hope we're not using dirty tools now right?) get jammed into your cgums or whatever...

Taking the antibiotics now may only serve to allow bacteria to develope a resistance to it when it comes time to sit in the dental chair. Best to wait.
