Another post to ponder over:

How many of you have tried these new scar menders they have on the market now? I am trying the one by Curad - supposedly by wearing this patch for eight weeks or more, it will significantly lessen the obviousness of a scar.

I tried one (can't recall the name). It was a cream that was supposed to reduce scarring, itching and keep the nasty keloid's away. It was about $50 a tube.

I tried it for 12 weeks. I did notice the redness and itchiness was reduced a bit. It was not an enormous difference. I tried it because I was getting a raised red area at the bottom of my scar.

I used Mederma. My sis in law swears by it. I think it helped but who knows how I would have healed without it? It was about 24 bucks for a large tube.

I'd like to know too, what kind of results people have gotten with the Mederma, that's just a cream, right?

I tried the Curad Scar Therapy.. unfortunately, I have a pretty bad allergy to adhesives, (it seems to be getting even worse), so I break out from the pads. I still have some left, actually.

Lately, even certain bandaids make me break out and others just leave a red mark for a couple days after removing them.

Hi Christina,

I don't know if this is the same sort of thing that you are referring to, but I have a friend who swears by the silicone patches made by Cica-care. These aren't "adhesive", but they do stay in place quite well over the scar and you can wrap a bandage over them for extra security if you need to (..if anyone has seen those "nude bras" made from silicone, it's kind of the same thing..). My friend has the sort of skin that doesn't heal well (she gets bad keloid scars), but having tried all sorts of creams and oils, she couldn't get over how successful these patches were.

They're quite expensive to buy, but you can clean them quite easily in warm soapy water and re-use them for quite some time - according to the manufacturer's brochure.

Cheers

Hi Christina,

I have never tried the mederma, but did use a scar covering make- up called Dermablend which did a really good job of hiding the scar, especially when it was early on and reddish. They have different shades and will help you choose the best one. I got mine at Filenes Dept. Store, but assume that any large cosmetic department in a large Dept. store will carry it.

The good news (at least for me) is that the scar is barely noticeably now. A very thin, pale line that you really have to look for.

Other folks that I know that have had OHS have also had good luck with the scar being minimal after a couple of years. I hope you will also be in that category.

Thanks all for your responses. I am not allergic to the Curad Scar Therapy pads at all. It says on the box that it will take at least eight weeks to see a change.

Nan,
I have been thinking of getting the Dermablend for this summer - I have used it before on unsightly veins on my legs before and really like it - it stays put.

Thanks all for your help.

Another product you might want to try is covermark.

Website www.covermark.com

Was first developed for covering portwine stain birthmarks.

Is great on scars (and I use it for covering rosacea).

You can order test kits that have good size tests of different color makeup and then choose which you want to order.

I just thought I'd mention that I used vitamin E capsule oil and three years later, my scar is barely visible with no bumpiness.

I've tried Mederma and another product called Elicina. To be honest, I don't know if they have worked or not on my scar. It's still a little red (6 months post-op), however nothing drastic. Mederma smells bad too.

The vitamin E reference is worth investigating. A few years ago, my wife, who is a vitamin disciple, rubbed some vitamin E on a softball cut on my knee. After 2-3 daily applications, the wound healed with no scar.
