I completed the Dallas White Rock Marathon today. :) :) :) Ankles were real sore  for a few hours (even though they were wrapped) but are much better now. Have a few small blisters. :( Everything else is fine. :) I'm sure that I will be stiff for at least a few days.

Weather was georgous for spectators, a little warm for runners, but not bad. About 50 at the start. About 65 at the finish. It was great to run among thousands this time and with people lining the streets cheering us on. Not near as big as Chicago, NYC or Boston, but still wonderful. About 10,000 runners in all events. About 3,000 in the full marathon. Very well organized.

Started at about 10 min pace. Slowed at about 15 miles. Finished 4:39:59 (yes that 1 second matters)....ha ha :D Ran into (no, not literally) a few friends on the route. My wife met me as I left the finish area.

There were about 50 entertainment groups along the way. Rock bands. Dolly Parton impersonators. a handbell choir. One radio station had sequential banners like the old Burma Shave road signs. I remember these:
"Old runners never die, they just smell that way". (Hey, I resemble that remark)
and
"It isn't the mileage, it's the smileage". :) (Amen!)

It was a great day. Thanks y'all for encouragement. My plans are to jog shorter distances just for fun for a while and give the ankles and hamstrings some rest. I'm not ruling out another marathon, but need some healing and more family time. I still want to lose more weight.

Way to go Tom!

You've made great progress - 2 marathons under your belt! :D

Tom:

Saw footage of the marathon on TV last night. I had a 6:30 a.m. PDT flight back from Santa Barbara CA on Sunday, got in at DFW noonish...

When I saw the race, I told my husband you were somewhere in the sea of faces... :)

Congratulations Tom! :)

That is totally awesome and with one heck of good time! You are an inspiration to so many heart patients and non-heart patients to get out and excercise. Good job again! Sounds like you had a great time.

God bless you.
Mark

congrats!

congrats!

Congratulations, Tom! Isn't that about 40 mins faster than the first marathon you did!?! Awesome performance - take a few well-deserved days off so you can recover.

Q: did you use the Galloway method, or just run right through?

Thanks everyone.

It's Tuesday and I feel real good :) :) :) . Still pretty stiff. Need to move around. Took a brisk walk last night. It felt real good to loosen up a bit.

As for inspiration, I'm glad if I can give some back, for I have been given so much. It was here in VR.com that the seed of my marathon dream first got some fertilizer and sunshine. I will be forever grateful. :) :) :)

Bill, yes, PR'd by 43 minutes :D (and 4 seconds  ). And yes, I used the Galloway training and race strategy. I walked for a minute at each mile (or at a nearby aid station). I was hoping to cut out some of the walk breaks after mile 21 but my quads started to cramp up, so I added breaks instead and did some stretching. I'm sure that those breaks hurt my time, but they enabled me to finish healthy, and will speed my recovery time (that is working).

I had three time goals - "good, better, best". My first half was at "best" pace. Concerned that I was pushing too hard, I backed off a bit. From mile 21 on, the hills are over and I had hoped to pick the pace back up, but when the quads started acting up, I set my sights on "good". I had a little left for the last 2/10th's straight at the finish. I wouldn't call it a "sprint", but it was faster than I had run in several miles. Just think, only an hour improvement to qualify for Boston

Will do some heavy driving over the next few days. Will take walk breaks frequently. :D
