Hi everyone,
I met my surgeon Weds and after talking with him; I said: OH JUST BOOK IT! Lets get it over with! I have never had major surgery before or even been in the hospital except to have my daughter 25 yrs ago.
I choose April 19th. I may change my mind. I need to take care of dental cleaning and such before and that's not working out real well. I also choose a tissue valve and after talking with my surgeon I decided to let him decide which one when he got in there and saw the size of my aorta. I had a lot of questions and print outs of things on here to discuss with him but mostly; I don't want to be on cumadin. I guess it boiled down to that. I would rather bet that a less invasive type of surgery will be available to the general public next time then bet that I would keep my cumadin levels perfectly in balance or that a complication from it wouldn't land me back in OHS again anyway. I don't want to worry about a stroak or a fall or colon testings or even using power tools! I will get the newest treated tissue valve be it stented or not or porcine or bovine, as my very very good and valve experienced surgeon sees as the best choice for me. I am letting go with confidence but I will need lots of drugs! :( I need to plan my daughters wedding next year!
(Please say a prayer for me) Thank you all for all the help and information!! God bless you all.

I know you must be relieved to have the decision made- we will be thinking of you on the 19th and wishing you a speedy and event free recovery. You have a lot to look forward to with your daughter's wedding and you will be in great shape by then! :)

Kizzy,

So happy to hear you have made your choices. You will be on this side of the mountain in no time at all. :) :)

Please stay in touch with us and we look forward to hearing about your surgery as soon as possible. Can you try and have someone post for you on the 19th so we know you're alright?

Take care. Hugs and prayers coming your way.

Well, another step taken. I love the 'OK LET'S BOOK IT' statement. Next year you will be ejoying (or despairing) your daughter's wedding. It's work!

Are there precautions you are taking regarding the dental?

Hi and thanks for your reply! I am going to take the antibioics, as I always do before dental work. Thanks and see you on the other side. (I am going recliner shopping today!)

Congratulations Kizzy! The beginning of your new life is approaching quickly. Keep us updated.

best wishes to you ..my mom i sgoing through the exact same thing. she's doing her dental clearance, but we have yet to speak to a cardiac surgeon about types of valves, and i am too afraid about her being on coumadin.

Hi Kizzy, I too met with my surgeon, today. However because I choose to go with a bloodless surgery, he recommends a mechanical valve. His opinion is that every subsequent surgery is more bloody then the first and the risks of coumidin are far less risky then the blood loss that would occur during the (potential) second surgery that may be required with a tissue valve. I need to have a consult with an internist to check my platlet level before I have a firm surgery date. We are looking at somewhere w/i the next two weeks. Oh yeah I also need a bypass while he is in the neighborhood. This stuff is all so confusing and scarey. Wish it could just be done and over with and I too could be (on the other side of the mount.)..Hope the very best for you Kizzy, my thoughts will be with you. Laurie :p :p :p

Kizzy and Laurz,

I know you each have made the right decision, because that's how I feel it works -- whatever decision we each reach, independent of the other folks, is the right one for us.

I hope you've enjoyed your stays in The Waiting Room, and your "memberships" there are lifetime long. Please come back and share your success stories (and any others -- curious minds need to know) with the rest of us as we await our own turns.

Best of luck to both of you!

Happy for you
