I think I am finally getting somewhere with the shoulder surgery. Would you believe when I called Blue Cross 2 weeks ago, they did not know what this drug was.Talked to the Cardiologist's office today and have to do a stress to get a cardiac clearance. Better get off my behind and do more walking. They will order the Lovenox for me. Seems that I will only have to be on it for 3 days after. Called the Pharmacist and he said that he did not have any trouble with insurance companies paying for it. He thought it was around 80 per shot. Still alot cheaper than extra time in the hospital. Has anyone had any side effects from the shots? :D

If your talking about taking Lovenox for 3 days after your surgery, you wil not be therapeutic with coumadin by then. I would plan 5-7 days of shots before your coumadin is back in range. You should talk to your Cardiologist about this as well as the surgeon that is performing your shoulder operation. What about Lovenox before the surgery? You will have to quit your Coumadin 5 days prior to your surgery and should be taking Lovenox up till one day before your surgery. You might already know these things but I didn't see them in your post. There should not be any reaction to the Lovenox shots except your tummy will get black and blue where you inject it. Lovenox is very expensive, luckily you have insurance.

My husband is currently taking 40 mg Lovenox and the total charge per syringe was about $32 for the 100mg/mL strength.

WHO manages your Coumadin?

They can also act as your Lovenox Bridge manager.

When I had a Colonoscopy and upper Endoscopy, I was put on Lovenox Bridging Therapy several days BEFORE the procedure, starting one day after I stopped my Coumadin, then stopping the Lovenox 24 hours before the procedure.

I resumed the Lovenox injections the night following the procedure (~8 hours after?) until my INR was again in range which took several more days (with one or two INR tests to verify), even with a 'loading dose' of Coumadin the night after the procedure.

ASK your Cardiologist (and Coumadin Manager) for his/her recommendation on Bridging Therapy for your surgery. Having NO Lovenox Before (when were you told to Stop Warfarin?) and a fixed number of shots after (with NO testing?) does NOT sound like good management to me!

I still have alot of issues to get straightened out before I do this surgery. I understand what you are saying about bridging before the surgery. When I had my last surgery, I was off for 3 days and then went in for the heparin bridging. I have enough time to decide if this is what I want to do.Thanks for the input.

The most common adverse event is bleeding from the surgical wound.

Cardiologist's office called yesterday and I have to go on the 6th of October to get a stress test and a echo. She said that they will inject some isotopes and that will light up the heart? Never had this done before. She said that it would probably take 3 hours. I think that he is being really careful which is good. I have had the same cardiologist for at 16 years so we have gotten to know each other pretty well.We can talk about anything and he understands where I am coming from on some issues and respects my views. Whole lot different than the heart surgeon. My husband in diabetic so he knows how to give the shots and that will help. thanks to you all,
