I'm having a tooth extracted on Thursday. Have had to discontinue coumadin for 2 days. Dr. Ordered Lovenox shot but I don't know how to give myself the shot. Can anyone explain how to self administer the shot. By the way, I hate needles so this is going to be VERY traumatic for me!

I am not a nurse. I had to administer the shots to my husband when he came home after his AVR. The nurse at the hospital taught me. She said to come t about a half a pinkie from the Belly Button and administer the shot. I was told to give the shot in a different place around the Belly Button each time. I only bruised him once in three days. I'm sure someone else will along with instructions. I hate needles also but after 8 days and his INR was still only 1.5 we wre ready to come home

My PCP has told me his folks would teach me how to give myself shots when/if I need to use Lovenox. You might check with your PCP.
My veterinarian taught me to give vaccinations to my cats. I cringed the first time I gave a cat a shot. When I give cats a shot, I lift the skin around the neck or side of the leg and insert the needle in the lifted up portion, making sure I don't stick it all the way through.
I would imagine it's very similar to giving Lovenox shots in the abdomen -- lift up some skin, grit your teeth, and slide the needle in.
I'm sure someone will explain how they do it.

I also cringed the first time I did my own INR test -- knowing that I was going to hurt myself just a little with the Tenderlette. Wasn't as bad as I imagined, though.

Good luck.

I've been on lovenox quite a few times now. And in the month of January I think I was giving myself shots more days than not! And believe me, I HATE needles. Somehow or other I managed.

At any rate, I'm surprised your doctor didn't have them send the little training video along with the shots. But perhaps I can help. First of all, you will be giving them to yourself in the abdomen (tummy). Find a spot an inch or two away from your belly button on either side (alternate sides each time you give your shot), and wipe with an alcohol swab then pinch up the skin. Hold the shot in your other hand (usually the one you write with) like a pencil and "flick your wrist" (or so they say) to insert the needle into the skin. This was always the hardest part for me. I would have to take a couple of deep breaths, then just do it. The first time I got it in, then flinched and pulled it back out before I ever got any medicine in. So I had to do it again, with a slightly less sharp needle :(. Anyway, once it is in, press the plunger all the way down. Then you can pull the needle out. Do not rub the spot, even though it will sting a bit. This can cause bruising. Now, even if you don't rub it you can end up with some major bruises. Twice I must have hit a blood vessel because I had bruises that covered half my tummy!

Anyway, I hope that helped some (if it even made sense). Good luck. I understand your aprehension, and hope that you can get your INR up fast so you don't have to do the shots for long!

The shot is suppossed to go inot the skin, I was taught to pinch an inch and poke into that. Not bad because it enable me to tense up a bit with the hand that was pinching.

Hope everything is going OK since your dental work and using the Lovenox.

My sister had knee joint replacement (actually this is a total replacement of a partial done about 5 years ago) on Monday; came home Thursday and is on Lovenox shots 1/daily for 10 days. She's an RN and knows how to give shots. I told her about this thread and she said her starter pack came with a video. She also said to NEVER rub the site around an anticoagulant injection....
