Is bruising in the stomach normal from these shots? I have an area on each side of my belly button where I got the injections that is a good 2 " by 2" yellow and purple. I got these after my surgery also while on the Lovenox shots.

Yeap they are. Al was saying to use an ice cube on the area before injecting as it somehow decreases the bruising.

I also had bruising from the injections.

The Ice Cube trick sounds interesting...next time...

Also, be sure to 'throw' the syringe and don't let a drop form on the tip before injecting.

Hope this helps.

What do you mean by throw Al?

I'm pretty certain he means like a dart. Don't let the medication drip out of the syringe before the skin is punctured. Is that what you meant Al?

The other trick I learned from a nurse in a coumadin clinic was to inject the Lovenox very slowly- maybe over a 30 second period or so. That seems to help a little bit.

Whenever I am on Lovenox I get huge bruises on my belly. I do each injection the same and sometimes I get almost no bruise but still the net effect is an "eggplant belly". The bruises take forever to completely go away. The series of shots that were the worst though were ones that the phamacist drew up in his own syringes rather they using the pre-filled ones from the factory. I haven't tried the ice cube before injecting but I will next time.

Hi Randy

When I needed those shots lost year hubby removed the cap from the syringe while the syringe was in an upright position--needle pointed at ceiling.

Then he inverted the syringe allowing the bubble to flow to the top--end away from tne needle and then injected the lovenox.

Luckily for me all I had was the zigzag pattern outlining the site where each injection entered the skin--no bruising. PCP and others were greatly impressed with the end result.

Maybe years of injecting penicillin into a horse's rump perfected his technique!

Thought this might help if you're not already doing so.

well I will try those ideas. Ihave to start them tomorrow again but the problem is, there is no area near my belly button that is without purple/yellow. Do you have to stay as close to the belly button as possible or can you move further out away from it. This is the 3rd time I have had to be on Lovenox in the last 6 weeks. By the time I get back to theraputic with my coumadin I have to stop again to get my epidural.Oh well such is the life of a mechanical valver, could be a lot worse

Injection sites moved away from navel

Injection sites moved away from navel

Hello again

Injection sites began near belly button and then moved away alternating sides every other day.

Also, check for other injection sites--upper thigh. I remember reading that somewhere--maybe on Al Lodwick's site.

Hi Randy

Let's hope your spouse is a quick learner and possesses good hand/eye coordination even at 20 ft distance.

Cheers!

Just in case your wife can't get near the "bulls eye belly button" just an FYI that I seemed to do fine with the shots much further out onto the sides of the abdomen (the bruising near the belly button was really bad). I like Betty's phrase if "eggplant" belly. that is sure what mine looked like ! And I used the ice too...it does help the pain somewhat. I find these shots very painful.

Good luck.

In June 2005 I was on Lovenox shots for a week and I bruised like crazy. I gave up abd let my daughter do the shots for me. I was still bruised all over my (big) belly. My hubby took pictures and they were gross. I was so relieved when I was able to stop them. I wonder after all that was it worth leaving the hospital and going thru all the pain of the shots and I was so sore from the bruising. Dont get me wrong, I hate hospitals but I think my Dr should not have released me so soon with an INR of 1.3. I pray that does not become an issue again. Maybe my daughter and I were both injecting the needle wrong. We followed the nurses instructions and thought we were doing it right. Sorry for the long answer. Good luck.

Alicia

Never try to blow the bubble out of the syringe. This will cause no harm by being injected. If you blow the bubble out, you get Lovenox on the outside of the syringe. This causes it to come in contact with the skin and increases the risk of bruising. It you wipe off the Lovenox, then you wipe off the silicone that causes the needle to go in easier and it feels like you have been harpooned.
