Hello, I have been overweight for 20 years.....actually the heart problem was caused by the phen-fen combo.
Now my knees are giving me trouble. I have decided to diet (again) and go on the liquid diet which I used successfully 10 years ago.....it was medically supervised and the supplements are available online. I'm not morbidly obese, but feel that a 20 lb. loss would make me feel better. Just occurred to me.....are there any contraindications to the liquid diet if you are a heart valve patient? It ranges between 500-700 calories a day. My surgery was 15 months ago and I am doing fine (age 68). I am thinking of doing a 2 week "quick start" (actually this is day 2) and then trying small amounts of healthy food.

Thanks for any insight.

Pat

You don't mention if this would be under medical supervision this time. I would not go on such a severely restricted diet without medical approval and close supervision.

In fact, just in my humble opinion, you can't get needed daily nutrients on 500 to 700 calories, Again, just my opinion. I would shoot for a slow and steady 1 or 2 pound a week loss rather than a faster loss (which usually winds up going right back on).....And yes you can do damage to yourself with extreme diets.

Pat, no offense, but I hope you are not on a diet with a daily range of 500-700 calories per DAY. That sounds crazy.
I can't even begin to imagine how much stress is being put on your organs with that level of dietary restriction.
PLEASE see a doctor and devise a safe nutritous meal plan.
Best wishes :)

We have to be patient when it comes to weight loss, especially when the extra pounds have been on for a long time! If you deprive yourself of enough food, you will soon tend to binge and eat just anything to compensate.

Start slowly by cutting down your portions. Do it gradual...eat less of everything you are used to eat. I personally would not follow the liquid diet or buy anything to help me diet.

Good luck.

Not to gang up on you or anything Pat, but you said you have been on this diet before - so you know how easy it is to gain it back after such a quick loss. I too wouldn't recommend anybody go on such a low cal diet (heart valuve replacement or not) without a Dr.'s supervision.
