Hello all,

I'm new here! Reading about other peoples recoveries from open heart surgery is very reassuring - thank you to everyone who has shared their experiences.

Has anyone got any information regarding lifting/exercise restrictions following valve sparing aortic root replacement? I'm waiting for an appointment to see the surgeon, but in the meantime am just trying to get as much info as I can about what to expect post-surgery.

Also, has anyone got any advice on getting fit prior to surgery? My heart, valves and other coronary arteries are all "pristine", according to the cardiologist. But, I'm worried about overdoing things and well aware of what may happen should my aorta dissect. The most strenuous thing I'm currently doing is walking and gentle cycling.

My story so far: I'm a 41yr old otherwise fit & healthy lorry driver and was found to have a dilated aortic root (4.3cm) about 10 months ago during investigations into pneumonia. It has now grown to 5.1 cm and I've recently had an angiogram and cardiac MRI, prior to seeing the surgeon. I've been tested for Marfan's, vasculitis and other tissue disorders - all thankfully negative, but my blood pressure is a little on the high side. I know that I'm very lucky it has been found - my cardiologist has told me that this is usually discovered during a post-mortem exam.

I'm just trawling the 'net to find as much info as I can, so I know what to expect.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

I had a 5.5 by 5 Ascending Aortic Aneurysm and an Aortic Root Nip-tuck with sparing my BAV on 5 April. I'm doing great so far. Before my surgery I was told not to lift over 30 to 40 pounds as lifting can cause a dissection.

Hey Nobby,
Prior to my surgery one surgeon told me that after surgery he didn't recommend "lifting fridges or pianos". I ended up using a different surgeon who has now said no restrictions for me. Prior to surgery with my 6.7cm aneurysm in the ascending aorta I was told not to do any heavy lifting, especially pushup/ bench press type since the pressue it builds in your chest. I also had valve-sparing aortic root replacment in July. So far so good at last checkup.
