And so it begins, that nagging cough that turned into bronchitis has made me get antibiotics. I was to take 500mg of Biaxin once a day for a week. Mind you, this is on a supposed INR testing day, so I'm told to wait till Monday to have it tested. I go in last Monday for my last needle jab before starting at another clinic that uses fingersticks, fully expecting to have a high INR since Biaxin is Clarithromycin. Well whatta ya know. I test at 2.4! Now I'm not happy. Here we are on the 4th day of Biaxin and only 2.4? O.k., I'll accept that and make a 10% increase over the week.

Now we come to Friday. I'm now off of the Biaxin. I go to get my first finger stick and whatta ya know, 4.8! I'm told to hold one dose and resume normal schedule then retest in one week. I'm going to do just that this time. This will be interesting when Friday rolls around again.

I'm now thoroughly convinced that the needle jab lab is not accurate at anytime that I go. I look at my chart and dosages and see a trend-Same dose going well below and well above range. There is a period of stability, meaning that I've tested more in range at this particular dose then not, but clearly, something is not right with this picture. I can't wait to see what trend develops with this fingerstick testing. This should be very interesting. Meanwhile, I'll be filling in the forms and getting them off to Michele in hopes of getting my own machine. I now have my Cardiologist who agrees with me and will prescribe it. I may not get it, but darned if I'm not going to try!

I don't like to drive anywhere near that dang hospital and wouldn't you know the coumadin clinic is in a new physcians office building right in front of the hospital! Oh well, I may not like the drive or the scenery, but the fingerstick testing is so much more enjoyable that I actually look forward to going now. I told all of you I'm just not right in the head. Guess not huh?

Hi Ross,

How do you keep track of your INRs? Do you have an actual graph or table? I want to get some sort of system started and I'm not quite sure what is best. What is the highest you ever tested and what was your lowest?

I hope the anti-biotics helped and that you are feeling better. I've got the papers to fill out for a home unit but I think I'll wait until after surgery to apply. Good luck with yours!

Have a good day today.

Betty I use Al's graph:
http://www.warfarinfo.com/monitoringgraph.htm

I keep track of my diet, meds, etc. along with dosages.
Highest I've tested is the current 4.8 Lowest was 1.1.

It seems where they trached me this last time, things collect at that point. It's just below where your nose and throat come together, so sinus drainage is a problem for me. The cough and congestion are still present, but at least I'm not coughing that yucky stuff up anymore.

Hello Ross..Hows the bronchiitis now? I hope you are doing much better. I had a colonoscopy Thursday and they removed a polyp. They put me on an antibiotic drip of something and Im due to be tested for my INR level Tuesday/ I wonder how it will turn out due to the antibiotic drip.

Im due to go in the hospital next Wednesday and be put on Heparin drip until my surgery next Friday. I stop my Coumadin next Sunday. I never knew managing this Coumadin was so difficult for me. Nothing in life is ever easy, is it? Take care and get well soon..

I have a "Dosage Calendar" from my fingerstick clinic, which has COUMADIN all over it, and says DuPont on the back. I assume they are furnished to the clinic free, which furnishes them to me free. My current one lasts for a year, but the previous ones have been for only four months.

I fully share your frustration, Ross, at the timing of the antibiotics and INR testing. I always go to the clinic Friday mornings, since it's only open on Fridays. My last course of antibiotic started Friday afternoon. Getting your own machine sounds like the best idea of all. I hope your bronchitis is gone.

I'm FREE, I'm FREE of needle sticks! Yippee!!!! Oh wait a minute, I haven't been approved yet. :( :D

Ross, if it would help, we could circulate a petition for you and gather everyone's signatures. Or.....maybe you can make a deal with the company for a free machine in exchange for a few free commercials (done by you) here on the forum.:)

p.s. I downloaded the graph- thanks
