germs

germs

aaaahhh, one of my soapbox-worthy subjects :D . In the early seventies, I worked as a bacteriology technician in a large teaching hospital in Scotland, and the first the the "newbies" did was to swab themselves - hair, scalp, several sites on the hand etc., and anywhere else they wanted. These cultures then went on the usual round of grow and testing. Results - germs are everywhere - no surprise there !!!!! Our bodies have developed an immune system to fight these things off, and one of my (personal) pet theories is that all these germ-killing cleaners and soaps etc. may actually harm our ability to fight them off in the long run. One of the things that most people don't realize is that we need some of those germs - certain bacteria in your digestive system are the only way that your system canbreak down the cellulose in vegetables. Some of these bugs that can be found in and on our bodies do cause major problems, though, when they are not in the place they should be in.

I'm not saying exercise precaution, but let's not overdo it! Oh, and by the way, some studies have shown that the germiest place in your house is NOT the toilet, but the drain in your kitchen sink; and the worst culprit for transporting germs from place to place is the bottom of your purse.

Now, don't get me started on antibiotic use . . . . .

After viewing the "snopes" thread & reading the posts here, yesterday evening my husband & I went out to a nice seafood restaurant (Red Lobster) & I took my little bottle of "squeezee it" lemon juice in my purse! At the restaurant I asked the waiter to hold the lemon & when they brought our meals & drinks, I took out my little bottle & put my own lemon juice on everything! It was delish!:)

I've read the same thing as netmiff said. By killing off all the bacteria and germs with cleaners, hand sanitizers, etc., we could be killing off things that we need to stay healthy. Similar to the problems caused by the overuse of antibiotics. Then, super germs will develop and we'll have to find super cleaners and antibiotics to kill them. Then super super germs will develop. It is a vicious cycle. Wash your hands regularly, brush your teeth, bathe, and take good care of your body. Anything that gets through these defenses would have made it through anyway.

I don't buy antibacterial soaps or washes for those very reasons. I once heard that it's the friction, as much as the antibacterial element, when washing your hands that kills off germs.

My DIL doesn't buy the antibacterial washes for my granddaughter either. We do need to develop resistance to germs, rather than resistance to that which kills them.

I did bring the antibacterial gel along with me to France and used it. My hands were on lots of Metro railings and I was in a lot of public bathrooms.
