Does anyone have any idea why my Lavasoft Ad-aware freezes up during a scan? If I scan folder by folder on my c drive it is ok, but when I run a scan where it does a deep scan it freezes up. It is usually when scanning the registry. I have noticed that when I run my ad-aware at work I always hear the d drive run during the scan. My d drive on my home computer doesn't work very well. Could that be what is causing the scan to freeze? I am so confused. I see it finds things that I should delete but when it freezes I can't get to them. If I hit cancel it wipes it all out. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the ad-aware and it doesn't help. Any one have any ideas? Ross I need help!!

Whenever my computer starts to act funky I always run a scan (Windows maintenance) and do the thorough with fixes, and then do a complete maintenance with defrag.

I always look at the details. For me it's fun to see all the holes that are on the hard drive, and how the computer takes care of each one.

I know, I know---Get a life! :D

But usually this fixes things up. I also delete all the Temp files, and the cookies, prior to that and do Norton Clean Sweep.

A clean drive is a happy drive! :p

If that doesn't work, then call all the geeks in.

Are you positive it's freezing up or is it actually scanning and only appears frozen? If your sure that it's frozen, try Nancy's suggestions and if you still have problems, contact lavasofts support forums.

I found that when some of those programs get to a certain part of the drive, they take forever to finsh that part. The rest they sail through. Maybe it's the Registry, I just leave it go, and come back later when it's finished. A good scan, for me, takes something like 20 minutes.

I tried that beta 1 thing that Ross suggested, my computer is running great now, and it scans every night at about 2AM, I can hear it going. It takes about 20 minutes and gets everything out. Thanks Ross!

Yes its froze

Yes its froze

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have installed the Microsoft Beta spyware that Ross suggested. I have the Lavasoft Ad Aware SE Personal installed also. Yes, I am sure that it is frozen. I start a scan and come back several hours later to find it in the same spot. Its so frustrating. It never used to do that it is just a recent thing. I am not sure what the windows maintenance is. Is that a scan disk and defrag? I have ran both of those and they don't find anything. Is it possible the cd rom is messing things up? I know it sounds wierd but that thing only works half the time. AUGH!!

Windows maintenance is the scan and defrag. There are setting that you can use to get a thorough scan with fixes. You just do the scan separately w/o the defrag first and use the thorough setting. It will take a long time. Then when that is done do the regular maintenance. That means you'll be scanning twice, but sometimes that's just what the computer needs. With all the junk that floats around the Internet, I've found that I have to do this every few days.

You could also have corrupted software.
