I was wondering about Lasix as I was on Lasix and Aldactone every day after surgery as I had a lot of fluid. I lost about 40 pounds and now my weight has stabilized at the low end. I've been weighing myself everyday and if occassionally I'm a couple pounds higher I take some Lasix. When my sodium level was checked a few weeks ago my sodium was slightly below normal - I stay on a sodium restricted diet, and a water restriction.
My question is - is it common to take Lasix on an as needed basis?

Yes, it is. I was told by my card to go to as needed. Because she felt it might be possible I was dehydrating myself by taking it every day. Unfortunately, lately I have had to take it every day, as my feet and fingers keep swelling! But to answer your question, it is not uncommon to be told to take lasix as needed.

Ditto Niki. I take lasix as needed, also. Usually twice a week because I've eaten out and got a lot of salt which always swells me up.

I don't take Lasix (it doesn't work on me for some reason) but I take Demadex and occasionally boost it with Zaroxolyn. My cardio gives me free reign to skip the Demadex if I'm feeling great, or to add the Zaroxolyn if I'm bloated and experiencing tightness.

I seem to get one set of side effects (mostly Short of Breath) if I'm over hydraged and another if I'm underdydrated (occassional arrhythmias) so my PCP has recommended charting my weight (along with my meds, exercise, symptoms, etc) on a daily basis and taking Lasix plus Potassium whenever my weight is up by a few pounds. On days when my weight is low and I'm feeling 'spunky', I skip the Lasix.

Joe has to take Lasix and potassium on an everyday basis. Sometimes that's not enough and then I call or email the doctor and get directions on what to do.

Because he can easily slip into trouble with his kidneys, everything has to be tested on a regular basis, kidney function and electrolytes.

He's had CHF for many years.

He eats no salt.
