Last evening, at about this same time, I noticed a lot of my neighbors walking by..and cars going by. Went outside to find out what was going on....seems an age 80 year old Mother, was missing from her daughter's home..right around the corner from where we live. Her daughter had hired a caregiver while she went to Fla. for a funeral....The word spread quickly..and my hubby went out to help...LOTS of excitement..from Sheriff's cars passing by, helicopters flying over until 1 A.M...Sniffing dogs were brought in around 9 P.M....They asked for all people to go home and stay inside..so dogs could do their thing.Hubby and friends had already checked out vacant homes..(Part-timers)...I e-mailed a neighbor (who is a night owl) and asked her to please tell me if they found her ...Sheriff's guys had told my hubby..at age 80..she would probably be found within a mile... She was found at 3 a.m. a long way from our Mountaintop community.. down on a road below us...She went out the back and walked for a long ways to get to the first road down from us. Very thick forest..and MANY wild animals  We, all neighbors bordering her back turned on our back spotlights...but, she kept going down the Mountain...Helicopters kept us awake all night..(Wonder how many deer they counted :D ) I had to leave early for my annual echo..so ..just know they found her..Will post more on her condition when I find out tomorrow. Know, that she had left 2 times before. They found her in neighbor's truck and on a deck.. ...Bonnie

I hope everything is ok

I hope everything is ok

Hi Bonnie,
I am really hoping that everything is ok and I am glad she's safe...I wonder if this caregiver is gonna be in hot water over this one?  I just can't imagine anyone letting something like this happen on purpose. Harrybaby666

That happens fairly often around here.

We have a police scanner in the office and maybe 2-3 times a month there's a call over the airways for a missing person search, usually elderly.

The SHeriff's Department has a helicopter that's used for searches (it's not big enough to rescue people) that features an infra-red imaging system. The powers that be in county government have been making a lot of noise lately about cutting funding from the budget to maintain and fly the chopper.

Seems like a pretty dumb move to me. There is a chopper operated by US Coast Guard out of Buffalo, NY but it takes half an hour to get here when it's not being used to fly border patrols (it's main function) and the next closest one is either in Cleveland or Pittsburgh which are both about two hour flights. Coast Guard choppers are WICKED fast and they get flightline priorities over other lower flying aircraft...

I know there are services like LifeLine and such which the elderly can use for a nominal fee in case they need help or whatever, but generally if someone's walking out of the house and getting lost like that, they don't think to use the call button, or even know they have it on them...

Maybe at some point the same people (or some other entrepreneur) will make up a GPS locator device that one can wear on a chain around their neck all the time so that another one can find them through GPS should the need arise. GPS is accurate to within feet, that would cut search times down considerably....

Neighbor who was missing

Neighbor who was missing

I will know more tomorrow..when our local County newspaper comes out. Weekly paper...but heard, she likes to play hide and seek. Must have some Elderly problems.. Heard she was found down below my home. We have 3 acres behind us..I never go back there. I think the helicoper did find her. Must have come up from Atlanta...She was found at 1 A.m. Cold, wet and hungry. They took her to hospital for checkup...I don't blame the caretakers. She must have slipped out the back door. I don't think any medalert would help. She probably would not know how to use it..  They have only lived here a few months. Really don't know them...I'm sure the family is now thinking of other options for her.Bonnie
