Everything looks to be set, 7 AM this upcomming Wednesday for a Freestyle aortic valve relpacement. I asked about the Atrial Fib (sp?), and the liklihood of this occuring with me. He said about 20% of the time this does occur, however he can do a simple Maze procedure (during OHS) and this would reduce the chances. Actually he does this with the Mitral valve procedure. Thoughts?

He mentioned that I have a little bit of regurgitation in the mitral area, but this was probably due to the back flow from the leaky aortic valve. The Mitral is a bit enlarged, but fixing the Aortic would most likely fix this issue.

My two (yes 2) root canals are done, so from a dental standpoint I am ready.

Doc really feels that I will be going home in 4-5 days, which makes me happy.

This might be my last post (for awhile), so wish me luck everyone.

All the best. I was one of those 20-25% who experience a-fib post op. It happend twice within several days of surgery, but has not been a problem since.

Keep all posted on your progress after surgery.

Dan

Good luck, Chuck. May you have an excellent surgery and be home asap. We'll be waiting to hear how things went.

My best wishes to you Chuck. I understand the Maze procedure works very well so maybe doing that routinely might be the way to prevent the necessity for Coumadin in such cases. I will say a prayer that you can avoid Coumadin.

I look forward to hearing the update after surgery.

Godspeed.

Hi Chuck,
Just want to wish you all the best for your surgery, and may it go the best that it can go for ya, and you have a very speedy and comfortable recovery. Harrybaby666 :D :D :D

I hope the best for you, Chuck. You are in my prayers and I'll look forward to reading that first post that tells us how you are doing. Until later!

Hi Chuck

I don't post much but smiled when I saw your Q about AF. It is a wild ride at times, especially if you are young and your heart strong. My surgeon kept coming in every day to ask if I had had it.... Did not really want to see me go home until I did. It came with a vengeance - up to 240bpm for 5 hours, but most are much, much milder. The hospital bed was shaking when I had mine, fairly rattling. Had another one 1 week later and it was just a bit uncomfortable and went for over 24 hours at about 80bpm. I snapped out of the first one when I coughed (sure the drugs helped and the nurses do try coughs etc) and the second one I came out of while asleep (due to fatigue - can be hard to sleep when in AF). At least it tests the new bits and stitching out, hey?

Good luck, stay tough - it is all part of the process.
