I just thought I would jump on the band wagon and add a picture of the place I spent my summers as a kid. Thank You Karlynn for getting me hooked on viewing nice places to live and breath.... The pic I post here is of the Log Cabin my grandfather built and it was on leased land, and this year bought and taken over, so we no longer own it  :( :( It was nice and secluded and a very nice place to swim and spend time with my grandparents. I am really angry because my father and grandmother and the rest of the family had plenty of opportunity to come up with $5000 each for a total of $20,000 to buy the lot that the cabin sits on, but they "couldn't afford it" and therefore, the whole tract of land was bought by a developer and he said we could buy a "minimum of 20 acres" for $395,000.00!!! What a way to ruin a family's ejoyment!!! Anyway, I hope you like the pic... Harrybaby666 :D

Here is another pic looking out over the lake from about where my grandmother now has her current home. The water is absolutely clear and really cold until you get about 1/2 way into July...This lake is alot of fun...I hope you enjoy...Harrybaby666 :D :D :D

Hey Harry,
These are two Beautiful places. :)
I am sorry to hear you family couldn't keep the place in your first picture.
Take Care

Wow!

Wow!

Harry, those are wonderful pictures. Thanks for sharing them. I grew up in Maryland and the thing I miss most about summers here in Oregon is that there are NO lightning bugs. That picture made me think of summers chasing the little guys and capturing them in a jar to just have close by my bedside. Do you have fireflies at your lake??

Sorry you couldn't keep the cabin. I had the same experience with a beautiful old 3 story bungalow that my step-grandmother's father had built. It "went" to her neices and they sold it for way more than my husband and I could afford at the time. It's where I learned to love Oregon. It has fallen into such disrepair now. It is sad.

We just recently moved to a smaller home and our kids were so saddened to leave the house they grew up in. They drive by now and again and see other people's things in the garage and what not and it freaks them out. We all go through these sadnesses. It is just a part of life, but it doesn't make it any easier. You must have fabulous memories!! What a gorgeous spot.

Yes...I do have very fond memories....and a SCAR..LOL

Yes...I do have very fond memories....and a SCAR..LOL

Hi Marg, Hi Dave,
Yes, I have ALOT AND I DO MEAN ALOT of good memories.. my grandfather also had built a little wooden "cabin" ontop of the big boulder next to the cabin, and there was a cross support log to help keep the "fort" stable...well, I fell off of that log, and between two other rocks and split my head open...the lake was so rough that they couldn't get me to a dr. so I still have the scar on my temple today....This was just one of many....I am soooooo angry at my father and grandmother for this, and I cant bring myself to go over and see what's left...it just hurts too much... :( :( :( Harrybaby

These are beautiful.............

These are beautiful.............

I must know where these were taken - besides grandma and grandpa's place! That's a bit vague! :D I am so envious. Picture a tumble weed, a horned toad (or horny toad, as we used to call them), a sandstorm and, well, yeah, an oil well or two - not that we owned any, and you have Midland, Texas, where I spent part of my youth. In no way, can it compare. You have truly experienced heaven on earth. I am so sorry that the cabin is no longer in your family - you could be living there! Anyway, dunno if we could ever get there, as Katie can't fly, but it might be worth a very long RV trip someday. Thanks for sharing. Hugs.

Hi Janet,

Hi Janet,

These places are on a lake called Schoodic Lake in Brownville, Maine. Its located in the center of the state about an hour northwest of Bangor Maine and about 1/2 hour south of Millinocket, Maine. My father just retired to this area, as he needs a heart transplant, and has said that he has chosen not to have it, because of the low survival rate in his case, so he is literally finishing out his days right where he wants to be...I don't blame him. The fun I had (and still do) there as a kid is immeasurable...I have heard alot about Texas as my cousin was raised in Lewisville (about an hour north of Dallas), and I can imagine That the wide open spaces of Texas can get a little long in the space....I am glad you liked the pictures...Harrybaby666 :D :D :D

P.S. Here is another shot of part of the lake. The Mountain in the background is Mount Kahtahdin...Gotta Love It...LOL

Looks like a setting for a movie. I'm sure you have wonderful memories from there.

When are we going to realize that bigger and more expensive isn't necessarily better. Really too bad that it's going to change.

Tell Me About It...

Tell Me About It...

I absolutely cannot stand the way waterfront property is getting way to expensive for the average person. A two bedroom cottage that may or may not have indoor plumbing, or may or may not be suitable to live in year around, and only have say .25 an acre of land at the most can easily cost a person $300,000 on this lake even now, but here is the kicker...you travel 15 miles out to town, and you can pick up a 4 bedroom house for only $40,000.00... What happens is that alot of people (rich people) come up from Massachusetts and buy up all the property and kick out the average person....Not Good  Harrybaby666

I hear ya!

I hear ya!

Harry, I know what you mean about affordabilitiy. They have contributed so much to our culture and lifestyle in a positive way up here, but the Californians (I have no grudge, it's reality) are moving up to Oregon in droves and house prices at this beach on my avatar (one of the closest to Portland and therefore one of the "nicest") have gotten ridiculous. It is starting to spread down the whole coastline. Even our metro area housing cost has skyrocketed due to the new demand. I know it's inevitalbe, I actually love the cultural "upgrade" we're earning along with it because Californians are bringing their creative souls up here too, but I do worry about those who cannot afford any of this. My 3 kids are approaching the age of being on their own and I honestly don't know how they are going to afford to live as comfortably as we do now.

I envy you your sleepy little mountain. Mt. St. Helen's is starting to rumble, the lava dome is building. We had quite an experience in the 80's when she blew (and in the months prior). Mostly the ash blew east of us, but we did have a few significant ash dustings before the big eruption. (that stuff is like glass ? you can?t wipe it off, you have to hose it off or it will scratch everything.) On that day, since the wind was blowing east and it was marvelously sunny, everyone in Portland got to watch the plume continue to rise. It was an amazing thing. My husband and I were just dating at the time and we drove out to a better vantage point with a bottle of wine and some picnic food, and just watched and watched. An awesome memory.

We'll see what happens to her now!

Hi Marge,

Hi Marge,

You Know it's funny that you mentioned in an earlier post that you grew up in Maryland....It seems as if we both did a cross country swap, as I was born in Montana, and moved to NH when I was a weee little porker....lol, also, my mother is from Seattle, and for awhile, her sister, Margret, lived in Oregon, about where you are now....She has passed on, unfortunately, but I know that she did love Oregon...It's amazing what people do in their lives...isn't it? LOL :D Harrybaby :D :D :D

Harry, the pictures are beautiful! We have a log home at Eagle Rock, Missouri on Table Rock Lake. I sure hope our kids keep it in the family. We've worked so hard to have this home and we did every bit of the work ourselves. We try to go down almost every week-end. We come back real early on Sunday morning because we both teach a Sunday School class and I'm the pianist and my husband is the song leader at our church so it's imporant that we are there. It takes us and hour and thirty five minutes to get there. It's beautiful this time of the year with all the trees getting their color for fall. I didn't get to go down very much this summer because of my AVR in June but I am looking forward to going this winter and next summer.

Glenda,
My in-laws have vacationed every summer for the last 30 years at Table Rock Lake. I've been about 6 times. The go to Rod n' Reel Resort in Shell Knob. We have friends that live at the lake near Kimberling City.

Karlynn, it's a small world! We're not too far away from Shell Knob. We're going to Silver Dollar City on Saturday so we'll be going through Kimberling City.

Wow, again!

Wow, again!

I love the new pic, too. My problem is that I absolutely hate cold weather, but I could sure manage to live there for a month or two in the summer. Guess I'll buy my summer home there when I win the lottery or that Publisher's Clearing van parks on my street! :D I am sorry to hear that about your dad, but at least he is able to spend his remaining time in such a serenic place. You guys are in my prayers. Thanks again for sharing.
