Hello Everyone,
My name is Matt and I have been reading through these forums for about two months now since I found out I will be needed aortic valve surgery. I am scheduled to have surgery July 12th at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr. Pettersson.

Little bit about me:
I am 25 years old and from Dayton, Ohio. I played sports all of my life. Played baseball growing up and raced BMX for about 9 years. I have been with my soon-to-be wife Lindsey for seven years and we are getting married October 8th. I have two associate degrees; one in Computer Networking and the other in Cyber Security. (I am a “techie nerd”) I work for an amazing company as the sole I.T person. http://www.bundybakingsolutions.com

How I found out:
About 6 months ago I started working out. Trying to get my 145lb skinny body transformed into the muscle body that every girl dreams their guy would have. I started getting light chest pains after my workout once or twice a week. I was thinking it was just a pulled muscle or I was lifting too heavy. Lindsey and my roommates told me I should get it checked out but my procrastinating self kept putting it off thinking it was nothing serious. Finally, after 2-3 months I made an appointment on May 17th with my family doctor. Mind you, I haven’t been to the doctor’s office since my appendicitis in 1992! The doctor did the normal tests EKG, blood work, and then listened to my heart. She told me to give her a minute; she was going to go down the hallway to get some nurses. She came back with four and told each and every one of them to listen to my heart with the stethoscope. That is when I realized something may not be right. She explained that I had a heart murmur. That there was a leak in a valve and that that she didn’t want to scare me, but she wanted to send me right over to the cardiologist; Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed in Springfield, Ohio. When I arrived they got me right in and did an ultrasound on my heart. That was when they concluded that it was in fact a leaking bicuspid aortic valve. I apparently have had this all my life and didn’t even know it.

(I had a transesophageal echocardiogram(TEE) the next day to confirm)

Dr. Ahmed’s group wanted to do surgery the following week at Community Hospital in Springfield, Ohio but I declined wanting to get a second opinion.
Luckily for me, my boss has numerous contacts at the Cleveland Clinic; they got me in the following week. That is where I met with Dr. Rodriguez and his team (I say this biting my tongue but if you have never witnessed the Cleveland Clinic first hand, it is one of the most amazing places to witness not only the medical work done there, but everyone is awesome and has the upmost respect for each other). Dr. Rodriguez confirmed that it was indeed a leaking bicuspid valve and scheduled me to meet with Dr. Pettersson.

I met with Dr. Pettersson (super cool and definitely a one of a kind guy) and if a repair is not doable I am going to go with the On-X valve. I am kind of nervous about being on Coumadin but I think it’s for the best.

So here we are... A week until my surgery. I am neither really all that nervous nor scared about the surgery; I am just ready to get it over with.
I wanted to thank everyone on these boards for the great information they have posted; especially the admins for the time and effort they have put into them. I also wanted to give a shout out to Scott Eitman and Joyce Russo from the Mended Hearts Cleveland Chapter, as they have provided me an excellent support system (in addition to my family) and I definitely am looking forward to meeting with them. Thanks to all my family, friends and numerous people I have never even met for all the support. I hope to be able to give others the same support I have been given on these forums.

See you around!
Matt

Wow, that happened fast! I hope the repair goes well and you don't need a mechanical valve, and even if you do need a mechanical valve so what. You couldn't be at a better hospital for the surgery.

Thanks Julian, yeah having the surgery at the Cleveland Clinic has really put my mind more at ease.
Scott, I am going to leave Monday night after work and head to the Clinic, get in around 10-11pm. Thursday sounds great! Hope to be in tip-top shape by then. ha-ha

Question: Do they have wifi in the rooms?

Thanks,

Matt,

I had my procedure done at CC by Dr. Pettersson on March 16th of this year. He is undoubtedly a unique individual...in all the ways you want him to be. You are in great hands. I also must commend the assurance and guidance I received from Scott Eitman prior to my surgery, as it made a big difference in my level of comfort (and, more importantly, my wife's). Wait until you see how incredible the ICU nurses are at CC! The entire ICU staff is top notch, professional, and capable beyond belief. They are also quite easy on the eyes...and my wife let me post that because she thought the same :wink2:.

nngbwh - Thanks!

Greg a - Thank You, I made the Calendar!! ha-ha;

Scott - Yay!! Do some online gaming while I wait :)

Just ASK - Thanks for the reassurance on Dr. Pettersson, I have no doutes that he will get the job done. Funny you mention the eye candy, I actully have a few nurses that I met during my pre-testing that are going to check on me during my stay. Lindsey had mentioned that is why my blood pressure was high when I was getting tested. ha-ha

Hey Matt,
Just wanted to wish you all the best with your upcoming surgery. Before you know it, you will be posting in the post-op forum.
It sounds like you are in the best of hands and will get wonderful care at CC,

Thanks ottawagal I look forward to posting in that thread :)

I think had my first anxiety hit last night. I tried going to bed around 10:30, couldnt sleep, thinking about anything and everything. I actully started to have tightness in my chest and sometimes feeling like I couldnt get a full breath. I looked at the clock again and it was 3:30am. Finally just tried relaxing and think about my honeymoon.. wokeup at 6:30 for work.. yep.. very long night. I hope this is normal.

Hi Matt,

Wishing you the very best! I had an excellent outcome at CCF two years ago and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as your date approaches. I look forward to reading your post op posts!

Hello and welcome.
My GP had given me a couple of Ativan tranqs to take for the nights before surgery, but then the hospital
called me in 2 days early and I never needed the Ativan.
Hope you get some rest this weekend !

Thanks Bina, I wish my doctor would of given me something. The last 3 nights have been really bad. I'm not really getting any sleep until 4-5 hours after I goto bed.

Thanks for the tip Alesia, I will definitely invest in one.

Well, tomorrow is the day. I think I have everything ready. I have been reading through the forums a little more this morning and going through my head is "Did I make the right decision?" which was my issue a couple months ago. I expect everyone to have these same thoughts right before surgery. (I hope) I think im just going to cross my fingers and toes for a repair before they put me under.

God has a plan, now im just following it. :)

Hi Matt, just to wish you a very speedy recovery, you'll be fine! I will say a prayer for you.

Hi Matt,

Just wanted to send you my thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery. You are finally getting a hardware upgrade:tongue2:

You will feel better when this is behind you. I wish I had a surgery date. They say waiting is the WORST and I believe it!!

Post when you are feeling well to let us know how you are doing.
