Hello all, James is home!!!! He had the Ross Procedure FriDay Morning and He Came Home Monday Morning. He Is Doing very well.We Had the best Dr's nurse's and hospital staff ever. Dr Bailey is my hero. He was going to be sent home Sunday Morning but he still had a lot of draining from his chest tube so he had to stay one more night. He has very little sternum pain mostly back and shoulder pain. They sent him With 1000mg of tylenol and that's all. They took him of of morphine the second day. I have a question is it ok to use a heat pad ,those heat patches, or a muscle rub so soon after surgery. His Dad Has been giving him messages' and that seems to help but I would like to put something on him before bed so maybe he could sleep longer.

Sharon,

Glad to hear everything went well with James! Only three days in the hospital, wow, that is probably close to a record.
I can not offer any advice on yours questions.

Best of luck for a speedy and smooth recovery. Hope James is feeling better each day.

Some of those pain patches have lidocaine in them I don't think that is a good idea. Joe was always told not to put anything on the incision.

Run everything by the surgeon's office first to prevent any problems.

Good advice from Nancy!:)

So glad to hear he is home and doing so well. If you are speaking of using a limanent cream on the back and shoulders only, that would be okay. I gave Dick back massages with Ben-Guay every night- wouldn't put anything near the chest area.

I would not put anything on or very near the incision but the first night I was in the step down unit, I complained of some pain in my left shoulder. My wonderful nurse got damp heat heating pad and positioned it on my shoulder for me to sleep with that night. It made a world of difference and in the morning the pain was gone, never to return.
So happy James is home and doing so well.

when I was in the hosptial they put lidocaine strips on my chest, one on each side of the incision but not touching. They were to help control the pain. 12 hours with them on, 12 hours off. I would suggest calling the hospital back and getting their opinion before placing them. But nothing on the incision itself, that is for sure.

Sent home 3 days after a Ross!!! Wow! That is remarkable. Glad to hear he is doing so well. I'm assuming you are referring the use of heating pads or strips on his shoulder and back/neck. I slept on a heating pad on my upper back and neck for week or two after I got home. I also used the 'stick-on' heat strips on my shoulders/neck during the day. Both really helped with the pain and tightness.

Good luck with the rest of the recovery!

I'm so glad that he is doing well. You may have to tie him down to keep him from overdoing it! My son used those heat patches on his back a lot. He also used the kind that you heat up in the microwave. I'm not sure why I didn't just get him a heating pad?!

Wow, it sounds like James is well onto the recovery road!:)
I think using a heating pad on and off should be very effective and safe......however be careful with falling asleep on it. My friend burned her face doing that!

Welcome home James! Is three days a record? Any shorter and it would have had to been outpatient.:)

Wonderful Sharon! What a relief for all of you! Hope all goes well with James' recovery :) !

Well Done

Remember to listen to your body and eat (although it may not taste very good), breath and walk - DON"T over do things, recovery takes time

So glad to see James is home and doing so well. Hope he continues to have a great recovery with no bumps. Hope the aches and pains pass soon, both take care.

3 days wow! that makes going into surgery even better, but as with anything, you have to listen to your body and it lets you know when your ready for something. I can only hope I'm in the hospital for that long:)

Best of luck on a speedy but complete recovery
