The lead paper in this weeks JAMA indicates inexpensive unfractionated heparin can be used just like Lovenox, sub-Q and dosed by patient weight thus eliminating hospitalization, IV administration, and the dreaded four hourly APT test. It seems to work and I believe will soon become the standard of practise.

This was what my OB/Gyn wants me to do if/when I get a d&c with ablation. He says he has much less incidents of bleeding than with Lovenox.

This was an especially impressive study because of the authors. Many of them were the top names in anticoagulation.

If I read the article correctly, the study didn't include people who were on long term anticoagulation. How does that affect the study and those of us who have been on Coumadin for years? LINDA

Would only concern you if you were required to go off Coumadin and needed to bridge.

Would someone translate that into American English for me? I'm debating Ross v. Mechanical and I don't have much background with warfarin. THANKS!
Stretch check out Al Lodowick's site at www.warfarinfo.com You can get a wealth of information on Coumadin and what all is associated with it's use.

Bridging therapy is when we have to come off Coumadin, we need something to hinder clot formation on our valves, whether heparin or LMWH Lovenox shots every 12 hours. Once whatever procedure it is that we had to come off of ACT for, they keep us bridged with these products until we reach a therapeutic level of Coumadin back in our systems then discontinue them.

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse.
