Peggy in Alaska

It's 3 degrees here! My fingers are numb. I work in a Historic building and the heating system is awful.

Now the groundhog says 6 more weeks of winter! I'll never last!

Why do I live in Alaska?

And my husband is in LA and Palm Springs the next few days on business while I freeze in Anchorage. BoooHooo. :(

It's been very cold here for quite a while too, Peggy. Our lowest was -17, but for many days, it's been about what you are -3 to 3 above.

It's supposed to warm up today and tomorrow, maybe into the low thirties.

We have had a rainy, raw, day..May sleet tonight..but, we are suppose to have a nice warm weekend..with sun. :DBonnie

Oh Peggy!
Why, oh why, are you in Anchorage when he's in Palm Springs? That's the pits!
Our weather is like Bonnie's; wet and icey. I am disgruntled!

Peggy,

I've been meaning to post this ever since I saw your Alaska address. I took a year "vacation" with the Air Force at a remote radar site (Murphy Dome AK) just outside of Fairbanks. I enjoyed myself the entire time I was there. It was almost impossible explaining the COLD to my Georgia Girl Wife (Peggy also by the way), who stayed back in the DC area. Worse we had it was one night temps went to -43 and wind chill was in the -100. The entire site was mobilized to keep our 7 mile water line (above the permafrost) from shorting out and freezing.

This was the place I got my first frostbite. Of course all equipment was either housed inside heated garages or plugged to an engine heater. We had just been out moving drifting snow with a grader. I was taking off the "Mickey Mouse" gear and had already taken my gloves off when I noticed some tow chain hanging outside the storage box. I grabbed them with my left hand and threw them back in the box. Several days later I noticed these little oval marks across the back of my hand. When looking at it our site medic said "you picked up some chain with your bare hand???" You could see every link clearly for several weeks.

Of course 3 above zero was a heat wave at the radar site (HA). We would go outside without parkers (not for long mine you) and do other foolish stuff. And I was amazed at spring when the trees sprouted leaves almost overnight. Beautiful country but don't know if I could live there year round. I've had my feel of cold now. Now I gripe when it drops below freezing for a couple of days.

If it's any consolation Peggy, down here in "sunny" Australia, in February - traditionally our hottest month of the year, I'm sitting here with the heater cranking!! We've had 2 days of solid rain and wind and even SNOW in some parts of the state   I'm used to 110F+ weather this time of the year and had to dig out my hat, scarf, gloves and umbrella this morning to duck down to the local store for milk.

Crazy!!!

Hope things start warming up for you soon.

Anna : )

Peggy,

We're going to visit Alaska this summer when the weather's more hospitable. For now, we're having sunny 70 degree F. days with clear evenings in the 50s. :D
