Is yours sticking out ?

The top half of my scar is very neat and fading away a bit already, but the lower few inches are red and more pronounced ?
Do they tend to stay red or does the colour tend to mute or fade in time and if it's a sticker outer will it always be ...?
Whats to be expected from the healing cycle of big ole sternum scar ?
Has anyone tried honey to mend them quicker, I hear it's a popular cure ? I was going to slap some on but figured it would stick me to the bed ?!
I was told it had to be Organic natural honey, which made me wonder, what other sort is there !?

Everyone heals differently. Mine was red and had a bit of a speed bump, but that has gone down and its almost smooth with a little white and pinkness. I just used vit E ointment and wore an old tee-shirt because it is greasy.

Only time will tell.

the part that is sticking out is probably keloid and will always stick out. IT DOES usually fade in color tho. I wouldn't put anything on it until after at least 6 weeks. or ask your surgeon. I never heard of Honey, but Justin tried vit E after one surgery and Emu oil after another, I think for him the emu oil worked better, (but he quit after a week or so)

Emu oil !! Dont see many of those around here, and I wouldn't have a clue how to get oil out of it anyway ? Keloid, I hope not, that sounds nasty... It is a bit like a little speed hump !
Freddie, maybe we should have an inny or outy belly button pole, there could be a corrolation ? Just for the record mine's an inny ... Was an outy as a boy but I unscrewed it to see if my bum would fall off ? It didn't...

Mine is exactly the same, although I think it may be getting gradually a bit better. The bottom inch is redder and more raised. My surgeon told me afterwards that it tends to happen there because there are more muscles in that area.

Mine sticks out quite prominently three years post-op I've tried all sort of things to see if it will improve but nothing works. If you check out my TOOTs pic, which was taken a year ago, it hasn't changed one bit. I don't expect it ever will.

I am happier with mine now than I was 2 months ago! It is getting flatter and lighter in color, even the keloid part of it is flattening and fading. When I left the hospital, it was a very thin line and I was very very impressed...later, it changed...the top 2 inches OK but reddish, lower 2 inches keloid, below is a fine line, and the lowest is now pinkish (was reddish) and a bit raised.
I have been using E-Sil. I hear a lot about the honey...all honey is supposed to be organic, but unfortunately there are some who add caramelled sugar syrup to make more profit. So, when you shop, look for the word organic...use the honey and cover the incision with a gauze...they honey will stik only to the gauze which you can tape, and can be taken out under the shower next morning.

Hi Justin.. my first OHS scar (from when I was 5) had slightly wider parts at the top and bottom, but had faded right out and would also tan as well as the rest of my skin. I'm not sure if the wider parts took longer to heal back then, but heal they did.

My new scar is also a bit darker and lumpier at the bottom and the top of the scar also has a larger wound which seems to be healing nicely. I've been using a product called Bio Oil which in the short time I've been using it already seems to be helping the texture of the wound. I've also heard sunlight helps scars heal and fade, which may be why the tops of our scars heal better than the bottom (although I doubt you're seeing much sun over there at the moment to account for that!).

So far all of the sternotomy scar and the drainage tube scars are still very red, but I had a mole removed from my stomach a couple of years ago and it took probably a year, year 1/2 to fade out and flatten - now it's barely noticable. I think it's important to stimulate the area though to increase blood flow and also break-up scar tissue (which is probably why a lot of topical solutions help, although my physio is adamant that vit E cream is more effective than straight sorbelene, for instance).

Anyhoo... it's still early days! You can probably get a good idea of how well it will heal from other scars on your body - some people are good healers, some people aren't. If you're other scars have healed up OK, then I'm sure this one will too. It's just going to take time!!
