I have read alot of people getting their aortic and mitral valves replaced and it seems like they are mechanical. Can you replace both valves with tissue and is there any increased risks to look at?

Patrick Haley had two replaced with bovines, if memory serves me. You can check his threads to read his experience if you want.
By the way, Cathy, he's a Missouri member too!:)

I know it's done. The issue is probably age and the valves wearing out at different rates, needing replacement at different times.

Mitral anticoagulation

Mitral anticoagulation

Mitral valves seem to be very often mechanical - this is because

- the mitral position is at a centre of control nerves for the heart.

- Disrupting these by surgery is far more apt to cause Atrial Fibrillation than for the aortic position, and AF is generally treated with anticoagulation anyway.

It may be possible that there is some circumstance under which 2 tissue valves would be recommended, but I don't know of it.

The other issue is that tissue valves don't last as long in the mitral position as they do in the aortic position.

However, it's done in cases where a young woman wants to bear children, if there is reason why Coumadin (warfarin) use is contraindicated, or when the patient insists. If you're in your seventies, it's probably moot - go ahead.

Best wishes,
