Hey Al,
I am going into the hosp. on Thur. for a repeat outpatient surgery for the pacmaker. The leds have pulled away. I tested my INR today it was 2.4 and they wanted me top eat something High in Vit. K. So I decided to go for liver& onions since that is somethng I don't eat much. And it seems to bring down my INR the fastest in the past. MY concern is how long does it take food to infect your inr. I am supposed to test it in the morning before I go to the hosp. at 7:00 am. He said, they might have to give me vit. K shot if it wasn't under 2.0. In the past they have always bridged me with IV heperin because of the two stroked & blood clots. He didn't seem concerned this time for some reason

Thought you might be interested that Cleveland Cinic did a study and found that they can change the pacemaker without any issues if the INR is around 2.5 range. Discovered that this was not a big issue when they compared the results and interviewed the physicians doing the procedure.

We do not know how long it will take to change the blood test but would guess that it would be 1 to 2 days.

Best Wishes

I agree with J & J, I have seen pacemakers inserted without stopping warfarin.

The INR declines by about half for each 48 hours that you are off warfarin. This is true for people who take about 5 mg per day. If you take less, it usually takes longer to get the INR down. The more you take, the faster the INR will drop. If this sounds backwards, remember that the faster the body metabolizes warfarin, the higher your dose will have to be.

Thank Al,
My daughter was afraid that it would drop too! fast. Almost all the women in my family had strokes at a young age ,-grandmother 18 , mother 60 ,sister 35. I was 40 when I had my first one.All went well today. I went this mornig at 7:00 am was back home by 2:30. They was hoping to re-attach the lead but it was not an opition so they had to start over. That is why my chest is so sore. Hopfully this will be the last time.Thaanks for your ssupport! :D

If Cleveland Clinic replaces a lead, then you must be off coumadin. Change out the pacemaker allows you to remain at 2.5 and slightly higher.

Very glad that the changeout went without incident.

Hi Al,
I took my INR this morning and it was 1.6. I guess I will have to keep and eye on it for the next couple days because I am taking antibodic too! Thanks for your help!

I follow my Possum eating buddy (Al) ( He was the only one brave enough to eat my reunion treat in Golden) :p :p and I would tweak a tad of warfarin up everyday until Monday. Then, test...again..... :) Bet, you will be back up in range....Bonnie

Hi Sherrin,

Hope you get to the bottom of the low INR. As Betty suggested...Lovenox. I am trying to come up from dental surgery (twice in a week) having much pain still. My INR was 1.1, 1.1, 1.3, 1.8 today. Slowly climbing. One reason I do not like to come off the Coumadin. Tomorrow with be the 7th day on Lovenox. At the rate things are going..pray I can stay on the Coumadin. Time will tell.

Take care and keep us posted.

PS. Sherrin, did they give you the Vit K? If so.it is my understanding that this can hold the INR down for an extended period of time.

After what I said about seeing them done while fully anticoagulated, then today one of my favorite cardiologists told one of my patients to hold his warfarin for 5 days to get it done.

Hey Granbonny,
My husband ate a can of yoour stuff! You know the saying Mikie will eat anything! No Gina I wasn't given vit. K. No I am not on lovenox either

We'll this moring I took my INR and it was 1.3 and I called my primary care Dr. & the Dr. on call put on 15mg. today and 3 =40mg of lovenox shots. And told me to recheck tomorrow and call her back. This Dr. seems to know more what to than my own Dr. I guess it is a good thing since I haven't made the switch to other Dr. yet. This is just another example of why I need to do this!
Thanks everyone for letting me vent!

Hi Sherrin,

Happy to see they have you on the Lovenox. That bump in Coumadin...should get your INR up there.

I was 2.1 today. Continue the injections over the weekend. Check again Monday.

Al, this time...coming of the Coumadin may has been in my best interest. He had to cut the bone...and he said that is where he hit blood  Bone insult in the mouth is the worst. The pain is well,
Day 5 and just starting to turn around.

Sorry to hear you had to have oral surgery. I rather take a beating than to have my teeth pulled  I really don't enjoy giving myself theses shots either! My husband( Mike) had to help me get dressed yesterday for the DR. It was so funning watching him trying to button my blouse. They don't want to use my left hand at all. I sure don't want to do this for the third time! The thing he hated doing the most was to putting my ear rings in!!!!
