Ok looking post surgery and monitoring my INR.

There is certainly a lot to learn and there also seems to be two camps....adjust the medication to suit the diet.....and...adjust the diet to suit the medication....

I'm in the second camp i think and will be reducing vitamin K and dropping alcohol until such time as my INR is steady and i may then increase these items in a small and consistent amounts.

I've just read someone elses post on high INR's and thought that if you get this is it a valid treatment to increase your vitamin K or alcohol intake to bring the INR down rather than reduce the mediation...

Please be kind if the above is a stupid question, i haven't yet spent the research time on the post op side of things, been concentrating on the pre-op and immediate recovery aspects....

Dose the Diet

Dose the Diet

Hello Magic

Everything affects INR, not just food. Weight gain or loss, more exercise or less exercise some medications and on and on. So eat healthy and dose your diet--much easier.

The correct dose of warfarin is the one that keeps you in range.

Keep to regular life patterns in eating and excercising.
Naturally eating loads of green vegies will have a dramatic effect on ones INR.

Actually you chose the wrong camp, you want Camp #1 which I highlighted for you. It is much easier to dose what ever diet you are on.

I agree with Randy.

You should continue your normal eating habits post-op, rather than trying to cut back on intake of veggies, alcohol, etc. (BTW, oils also contain vitamin K, so you'd be cutting back on those too, not a good idea with heart-healthy oils).

Otherwise, you'll be setting yourself up for at least 3 factors in INR yo-yoing: the initial, or loading, dosage; then again as you begin to resume normal activity levels; and then again as you resume your normal diet. I'm not sure if "factors" is the correct word, but I think those of us on warfarin will understand what I mean.
If you continue your normal diet, you'll be ahead of the game.

I would stick with the first camp.....it would be so much harder to adjust you foods and alcohol. I know from my INR being messed up right now...it is eaiser to adjust your meds then food.

I would rethink which camp you want to belong to good luck
