I'm scheduled for a Cardiolite (radioactive dye) Stress Test and a Root Canal pre-medicated with Azithrymycin (Zpak) this week.

Can anyone tell me the effects of either or both on INR?

Is it safe to have both procedures back to back (next day)?

Your INR is going to rise with the Azithromycin. You'll want to check your INR about 4 or 5 days out after taking it to make sure your still in range. I don't think the cardiolite will have any effect on it at all since it's so short acting. May want to check with Mr. L on that one.

I don't know how well you get along with the stress test. I didn't. I can't recommend going back to back but that would be for me. You might consider asking about that too.

From Mr. L's site:

After about three days on azithromycin, your INR can increase to a level where you are at a danger for having a bleeding episode. At this point, you usually have only two more days of azithromycin. It is important that the prescriber not overlook the long azithromycin half-life. Your warfarin dose will need to be held or decreased for several days. You should have another INR test done about five days after you finish azithromycin.

Zpak

I used the Zythromax in the past and my INR did rise. I have also had several root canals and have only gone the route of 4 Amoxiciilen 500mg one hour prior to procedure. I have never had a problem.

Why the Zpak for a root canal?

I know for me the cardiolite acted like a powerful diuretic. If your INR is influenced by your fluid balance then I think you should be a little wary. I wasn't on warfarin then myself so this is just what I'm thinking.
