Am trying to research something on exercise/activity affecting INR level for a friend.

I've searched vr.com and found lots of statements from various people, including Al Lodwick, saying that increasing activity levels does decrease the INR, but can't find anything specific reflecting research, studies, etc.

Any help??

Marsha,
I don't of anything specific but after I retired I went absolutely crazy doing remodeling around our house last year.
My INR was steady as a rock since 1996 until then.
The heavy increase in physical activity dropped my INR like a rock.
Thanks to Al I got myself back on track again without slowing down my activities.

I don't have any formal research references, but I chart and montior my INR closely. Although I've stayed in range, my INR has trended steadily downward since I started training hard for triathlons early this year. During my training I've also cut back on my alcohol consumption, so that may be having some effect also. Would be interested if anyone can find any hard research data.

I think the general rule of thumb, Marsha, is that anything that affects how fast the blood is going through the liver, how nutrients are created (vit K) or absorbed in the intestines, or change in vitamin K intake is likely to change the INR.

I don't think that there are any research studies - just observations. But it happens very consistently.

Thanks to all.
I found an old Coumadin booklet put out by DuPont when it owned Coumadin trademark and it said to tell your physician about changes in diet, OTC & RX meds, and other things, including exercise/activity. But newer booklets, but Bristol Squibb Myers omit any such mention.
