Hi again,

What is the connection between INR levels and alcohol consumption? and is red wine drinking recommended just for the fun or does it have some positive impact on us? (I am by no means arguing the fun part....)

Daniel

Daniel,

I can attest that drinking no more than 2 glasses of red wine daily (preferably in the evening with a nice meal) is FUN, will relieve STRESS, and won't have any impact on your INR if you do it consistently.

Al,

I read your discussion, thanx.
I understand there is no difference between wine and alcohol in other drinks, as long as the quantity is controled. Correct?

Wine and heart health

Wine and heart health

While there may not be a difference in the alcohol contained in various drinks, my husband's doctors perfer that he have wine because of the benefits of wine to heart health. I did a search some time ago on wine and heart health and found many articles, including some that seemed to be solid research studies. Perhaps this link to one to an AHA document will be of some help to you.

Alcohol is alcohol as far as warfarin is concerned.

The other stuff that is mixed with alcohol is what has the effect on the heart, gives it various tastes etc.

Can you advise the best place to obtain a copy of the algorithm for Warfarin dosage?

Either way I will have it in the mail the next day. There are 6 algorithms printed on both sides of 1 sheet of card stock so it fits in a regular envelope.

What we coumadin takers need to think about is what drinking daily is doing to our livers? It's not about just keeping the INR in range.
My surgeon said I could have a glass of wine 'once in awhile', so I don't drink every day.

Consistency is the key to good warfarin management. I've never seen anyone who caused harm by 2 drinks or less daily. However, that does not mean that you can save them up and have 14 on Saturday.

As far as harming the liver, two drinks per day is unlikely to cause any significant harm. We have a generous supply of liver - like an 18-wheel truck and we can get by with a bicycle.

Lest you think that I am trying to justify my own actions, let me tell you about my own drinking habits. If it is free, I'll usually have 1 or 2 at the most. If I have to pay, I figure that it is not worth it. I bought a six pack last December when a friend was coming over to watch a football game and used the last bottle last week when I marinated a fish.

Al:

From your post, the way I understand it, even a regular one glass of wine a day, is not good even if your body tolerates it for you could still start to hemmorage internally. Is that correct?

People who don't take warfarin and don't drink alcohol still manage to have gastrointestinal hemorrhages. However, I have never seen one of my (over 1,000) patients making over 20,000 visits over the past 7 years who had a GI bleed from consuming two or less drinks per day.
