I was at my family physician yesterday my GP and it was suggested that I have a couple of vaccinations. While I was in his office he called up to the lab and ask about the pneumonia/ streptococcus vaccinations and anything else that they suggested for a compromised immune system for a valve replacement or prosthetic heart patient. So I went to the lab this morning as ordered and was given a pneu - p - 23 I was given the strain 23 vaccine for 23 strains of pneumonia. I was also given a tetanus whooping cough Pertussis and one other ? and was suggested to come back in 2 weeks on the flu shots were available for Alberta.
Anyone else do this prior to Valve Replacement?

I didn't have any shots like that prior to surgery, at least I don't remember any. But it sounds like your GP is describing you as having a compromised immune system, so if that's the case, seems reasonable.

The one recurring thing at my hospital was the concern for Mersa. Countless time I was asked if I had any contact with anyone who has traveled outside the country. I had to ask what that was all about and that's when I was told about Mersa. They even gave me an antiobotic ointment for days prior to surgery which I had to put up my nose, because that's where The Mersa virus enters the body I guess. And then they did the same thing to me every day I was in the hospital.

Well it's very dry in the hospital! So as soon as I was released and got outside in the warm moist Florida air all that dried up ointment turned to liquid and a had a runny nose from hell. Well using tissues to wipe my nose and face I wound up getting some ointment in my eye and it burned like hell. It actually gave me a mild chemical burn and my eye would get very crusty with puss that took a few days to heal. It really was the pits!

almost_hectic that sucked as if you didn't have enough to worry about. I have received a flu shot 4 years running now. Yesterday I was given a Pneu-P-23 strain vaccination along with a Portussis tetanus whooping cough and one other one shot vaccine combination.
In Alberta it is suggested anybody receiving prosthetics for heart disease or replacement should in fact should be immunized against the above. Yes I do have interstitial lung disease so I don't need pneumonia that's for sure I would probably not make it. I have rheumatic heart disease which is the reason I'm having Values replaced which is caused by Streptococcal a strain /strepthroat from about 25 or 30 yrs ago the virus attacks the heart or the brain in my case the heart although sometime l question the brain part. Lol ! It is precautionairy but suggested for comprised ammune system and prosthetic surgeris even knee replacements etc. I will go in for the flu shot soon as it is available.
