Andrea

Today I spoke with my Cardiologists Nurse Practitioner. She was adjusting my coumadin level and asked if I wanted to come into the office for a finger stick instead of going to the lab. I told her I would just go to the lab (5 miles closer) until I got my own home testing finger stick machine. I also mentioned since they have one in office that must be why my Doc told me there were no home testing units. The nurse quickly and firmly said 'there is no such thing as a home tester' I might have been too firm but I jumped right back on her and very firmly said 'Oh yes there is and its a PT machine by QAS and I have all the information on it sitting on my desk and I will be bringing it in next week.' She backed off but why do I get the feeling I'm going to have to take my information brouchures to the office and smack them upside the head?

I also told the nurse that not only is there such a thing but I WILL HAVE ONE.

I'm so ready for a fight :) They may be a Sun City office but I'm no 90 year old ... watch out! :)

Tell ya what Andrea, once you've started waging your war and see how it goes, why don't you come up here and give me a hand? I'm still fighting and I'm getting tired. Tired that is, until they stick me with a needle and miss! I'm sure you'll have to take the information with you. Some places just don't want to admit that some people are capable of testing themselves.

Ross you had once mentioned that you had numbers to back the accuracy of home testing (I think). My only problem I think I will face now is weather home testing is accurate. If you know where I could find some information I would appreciate it. I got the package of brouchure type information in the mail from QAS last week.

You go, girl!

You go, girl!

Andrea, you're a girl after my heart. And I truly think you hit the nail on the head with the Sun City thing. They're just programmed to assume that they have incompetent patients and aren't willing to make the effort to change their approach unless dragged kicking and screaming into reality.

Even at my age (53) I feel like a kid most days when I go to the cardiologist (or even the internist). Just like I feel like 80 when I go to the gynecologist. So I don't think the different age really registers on the docs unless you hit them over the head with it.

Maybe in Arizona, due to the demographics, they should have heart specialists for those under 55 or 60. Then you guys could have a shot at being treated as compos mentis.
