Round two took place on Friday and I was sent home yesterday with my shiny new on-x valve. :) Going through this a second time is quite a different experience. Being familiar with the aches and pains and little things that worried me the first go-round were no big deal this time. I'm doing MUCH better than I was this time last year. All in all I'm happy I went with the mechanical valve. Even though this isn't the worst thing in the world, it sure isn't fun. I'll be happy to never have to do this again! Now I'm just trying to learn as much about anticoagulation therapy as possible and look forward to home testing in the near future. Thanks again to everyone for their well-wishes and incredibly helpful information!

Welcome Home, Dave. So happy it went easier for you this time and certainly hope this is the last time you need to do this.

I am 9 weeks into recovery from my second OHS in four years and also found it easier in many ways. Don't kid yourself though.....You still went through the same traumatic, serious surgery. While the first days/weeks definitely went easier for me round two, you may find at about week 4 or so, you reach parity. Things seems to become equal at that point. I'm still sore, still having the good/bad days thing and some fatigue. But, not to jinx myself, an uneventful recovery.

Follow the usual orders and sounds like you'll do great. The walking seemed to make a huge difference for me this time....maybe even more than last OHS.

Hope you have an easy recovery!

Congratulations, Dave- glad you are home and sending best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Welcome home! If you have trouble with anticoagulation, come on down to the anticoag forum and tell us about them. Beleive it or not, the very people that manage you may not know what their doing.

Welcome home Dave....i'm thankful you had a complication free surgery and i hope you have an uneventful recovery!

Thanks everyone!

Ross, it's pretty amazing to hear such conflicting opinions regarding the warfarin from different doctors a few minutes apart! I honestly want to take as much control as possible over my dosage. I'm hoping my cardiologist is as forward-thinking as my surgeon is. I'll find out tomorrow!

Congrats

Congrats

Congrats. I hope you have a good recovery. I just got home a week ago.

My latest update is insurance related...

I have COBRA insurance because I turned 25 and I am no longer eligible under my parents insurance, but I am a full time college student. After this second surgery the insurance company is now trying to pull a fast one by saying the plan was only good for 18 months, and I am terminated as of 4-30-08. I have my enrollment paperwork stating my coverage is until 10-31-2009 which the insurance says is wrong, because "all COBRA insurance plans are for 18 months." They also conveniently billed me for this month even though I am terminated.

I looked up the COBRA act of 1986 and it states that by law the period of coverage is for 36 months because of loss of "dependent child" status. I'm collecting all of my paperwork and thoughts. Now that I think about it, this is more of a vent post. :) I'm just really upset. All of the bills are starting to pile up in my mailbox because the insurance account they are trying to bill is terminated.

Hey David,

Did that all get straightened out?
