Mordecai Siegel's newest book, The Cat Fanciers' Association Complete Cat Book, has just been published -- and I'm one of the contributing writers (chapter for pet cat owners). It's available through CFA (www.cfainc.org) or Amazon, am sure it will make its way into stores soon. It seems to be a pretty "complete" book, just as the title says.
Wrote the chapter 4-5 years ago. Project got put on the backburner while Mr. Siegel underwent treatment for cancer.

I'm tickled to death. Just like my first bylined story right out of college, 32 years ago....

Congrats on being published! You must be very knowledgeable and proud!

Marsha,

Congrats. How exciting to hear about the publication. I am writing a book and may even finish it before I am 85. I hope to have luck getting it published.

I will look for your book.

Take care,
Gina

I have two kitties who are suffering kitty anxieties and need kitty paxil, can you help me? :D

Congratulations!

Marcia, Sorry, Alice and I are dog people. We have had two dogs mostly Keeshonds and border collies for over 50 years. We like the books by that fellow Cats ( or is it Katz?).

Marty:

I also like dogs ... (My husband & I had a dog (cocker-poodle mix) from 4/81 to 12/96).
I visit dog shows in Fort Worth when my schedule permits. I talk to breeders & handlers at shows, learn something about what they're showing, shop for grooming supplies for my cats.
Some cat breeders (and a few cat show judges) also breed/show dogs. One cat show judge does alpacas. :)
If you can appreciate a fine specimen of one species, you can develop an eye for fine animals of other species -- not just beauty, but how well they move, if various body parts are in proportion, shiny coat (signifying healthiness), temperament/personality, etc.

Even if you'd rather hear have man's best friend meet you at your door rather than have a fluffy snowball rub your ankles over and over and over and ... :D

Marsha, With that good a recommendation you may have persuaded us to get our first cat. I have an old friend and partner whose daughter is a veterinarian who specializes in cats. She has her own "hospital" and clinic. No dogs allowed!
What breed would you suggest for a first cat? Thanks! Marty

Marty:

What breed of cat often depends on the human's personality, lifestyle and expectations. Some people are very active and may not want a lap cat; others are couch potatoes and surely don't want an Olympian athlete for a pet.

Among the breeds that are very adaptable, laid-back are (1) American Shorthair (the silver classic tabby is particularly striking); (2) Chartreux, a shorthaired French breed that is silvery blue; (3) Ocicat, another shorthair cat that looks like an ocelot and is very athletic; (4) Birman, a longhair breed and semi-lap cat that does NOT have to be combed/brushed because it does not have a downy undercoat that Persians have; and (5) the Maine Coon, a very large, longhaired cat that can grow to 18-24 lbs and which we call "gentle giants." There are quite a few more breeds that would be good. I would stay away from Persians, Exotics for sure because they are high maintenance cats due to daily brushing/combing.
Many men take to Maine Coons, Abys and Ocicats, I think because of the size or "wild" looks.
My parents particularly like American Shorthair cats. There was an American Shorthair in the Stewart Little movie. I recommend Americans for families with very young children. These are cats who would probably tolerate being dressed up in doll clothes and wheeled around in a child's stroller.

Many cat clubs operate rescue programs and, of course, you can often find a very personable cat at a shelter. I've seen shelter rescues shown in our household pet competition at shows, and many have great personalities.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Both of mine were throw away kittens..I happened to find my K.C. in hot weather, dumped in parking lot at Marina. Yellow tabby, age 12. Rasied on our houseboat for 8 months. what a joy she was to our boat friends. She was our Dock Cat... would climb their ladders, ect. Feet never touched dirt for 8 months. Grew up with the noise from boats. Now, loves to travel in our motohome...Been to 30 states. :) Never tries to go out the door....now, our Rufus was found at age 6 weeks in a bush by Grandson. Eat up with fleas, ect. I will try to post a picture of him around Halloween. Beautiful, black with green eyes. :D He also travels in motorhome...You cannot go wrong with any kitten. Just give them plenty of love...and Fancy Feast. :D :D Bonnie

Forgot to mention that Rufus was found in the fall. 2 years ago. He spent the winter inside looking at my goldfish outside during the fall and spring.Pond outside a favorite window.Dreaded the following Spring when I had to let him outside with us..Driving me crazy. Do you know, he has never bothered the fish.. :D Even drinks their water. I know, not good. Run him away..but, I have one fish..Hootie who will come up and stick his face up at Rufus..Rufus just walks away..I think Rufus thinks they are family.. :p :p :p Bonnie

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Marsha,
What exciting news! I am so happy for you! :)

Congratulations!!!!

Congratulations!!!!

Oh, I know that just has to feel good! I actually had an article published in NGAUS (National Guard Association of the United States' mag) back when I was a young 'un in OCS. It was a fluke, though ( a ProDev assignment I threw together at three in the AM, not that I procrastinate! :D ), and not a well-deserved honor like yours. Relish it! Hugs and congrats again.

PS. If you are interested in trying to hook up with Cort when he is in town this weekend, give me a shout. I'll give Niki (gnusgal) one, too. It would be wonderful if we all could meet. Don's down at Fort Sam, but he should be back in time.

Marty:

I added Ocicat to the suggested breeds then looked at my posted note. Ocicats are not a laid-back breed; however, they are very attractive, intelligent, athletic cats that do appeal to dog lovers.

Janet:

Cort mentioned a Keller's on the east side of Dallas near Garland. I think he may be referring to a Keller's Drive-In on Northwest Highway near Abrams ... a great hamburger stand that actually still has carhops! I grew up in NE Dallas area and can't remember it not being there. I'll be talking to him later today or Thursday to see if this is the same location.

I missed Cort's call tonight.........

I missed Cort's call tonight.........

Cort left a voicemail and mentioned he was trying to nail down Saturday's agenda 'cuz he has so many people to see. Mr. Popularity himself, heehee! Seriously, I have known Cort for I guess about three years online now and am anxious to meet him in person, and Niki and you, too, of course. We are free for most of Saturday, so just let me know. If it is an adult thing, then I will need to find a sitter for Katie - not too hard - my mom lives five minutes from me. :D Otherwise, I'll tote her along. May have to get a cage, though, to keep her in check! :D

Will try and return his call tomorrow. Hope to see ya soon.

Congratulations, Marsha. I'll look for the book and pick up a copy when I locate it.

I enjoyed meeting you in Golden and loved hearing you talk about your cats and your travels. I bet you make a very good judge.
