Hi all you working stiffs, I have now joined you and I am feeling tired alot!
When I took my pets to a new vet I really liked, I applied for and got a job working the front desk. It's alot to know and my brain feels at times like the info is swirling around and not quite able to come out right.
But, they like me, HA! ,and so I am doing my best to get it.
I haven't worked outside the home since before my last AVR 4 years ago.
My only child went off to UC Irvine and so I decided to get back into the work force.
So far, so good, and I get 50% off any services, so a good perk there!
I've seen so much, and there is often emotional roller coaster.
One day we had a new sweet puppy in one room and a 4 yr old schnauzer that had been rushed in after being hit by a car. He died and I was so sad for that lady I couldn't sleep that night. So, I am hoping I can keep my emotions in check enough to deal with that part of the job that is so hard for all of us pet owners. I can really empathize with them when their beloved pet dies or has to be euthanized.
Wish me luck.

Gail,

Congratulations! It sounds like a rewarding job, although I'd have a hard time too dealing with difficult situations like you encountered. I love taking my "best friend" (see avatar) into our vet/groomer. We've been taking her there for 7 years. They have several house cats and dogs and I always love to watch my dog "pretend" to ignore the cats (big wimp :D).

Congratulations!

While your going to see your share of heartbreak, sooner or later you'll become used to it or at least it won't eat at you so bad. I guess you never really do get used to it. Keep plugging away and enjoy it as much as possible.

Gail, congratulations on the new job. As a former dog parent, I would ask you to try your best to never lose your sensitivity and compassion for your patients. We had a wonderful little Shih Tzu for over 14 years, and the veterinary staff at the animal hospital remains warmly in my heart for the compassion and feeling they had for our little guy in his later years. These are truly special people who can diagnose, treat and care for an animal even though the animal cannot speak or describe their problems. The folks who devote their lives to the animals are to be revered. Thank you.

Gail, congratulations on your job, and have fun! I have a friend who worked at a vet and she said that she never got used to the sad cases. She said she was able to manage the sadness better but it never stopped effecting her. I think that's a good thing.

When we had to put our cocker down last year the people at our vet were so kind and caring. We got a lovely letter of sympathy from them. When I called to thank them for the letter and tell them how much the poem in it had meant to me, the receptionist started to cry a little and said "Oh, you make us happy that we never lose our compassion."

I'm sure you'll have some pretty funny stories too - so let us know what they are.

Doesn't it feel good to work. I know when I started at my brother-in-laws office it felt good to get out of the house even though it was only 16 hours a week. Now I have two grandaughters that I watch 3 to 4 days a week. It just became to hard to work at the office too. I just don't have the energy after the girls go home. So last week was my last week at the office. I will now have time to pester you people at VR.

That will be a hard one to get past. Maybe you never will. I agree that someone like you is the best choice for a job like that, as there is little pain as intense as losing a beloved pet. Their demise affects us as much as a human immediate family member, it often seems.

Here's hoping that most of your stories from work are warm and humorous ones.

Best wishes,
