Miss Sally Sue, 65 lb black/tan hound, has developed some swelling on each side of her nose and seems to be really itchy. It developed suddenly awhile ago - daughter noticed it when she got home an hour ago.. Our vet is closed and we only have one vet for many miles.

Have you ever given your dog benadryl? We think she maybe got bitten by something (maybe a spider?) but she's been inside all day long and doing her usual quiet sleeping, so that probably isn't it. She rubs with her paw and rubs the side of her nose on the carpet like she's itchy. Resa wants to give her a benadryl, but we don't want to harm her.

Can somebody give us a quick answer?

One of my cats got stung by a bee on her nose, it swelled up for a day or so.

I would make sure that there aren't any teeth marks on her nose like a snake bite or other animal bite. If it's just an insect bite it should go away in a day or so like my cat. Is she in pain, doesn't sound so, or having any breathing difficulties?

I'm not sure about giving Benadryl, sorry.

Sounds like bee stings. Our Cocker used to bite at bees and get stung every now and then. What about trying topical benedryl. You can give dogs oral benadryl as well, it won't hurt her. You may want to check the internet for dosing. I looked under Dogs Benedryl and found guidelines a while back.

thanks - I googled (can I give my dog benadryl?) and got an answer. for dogs 10 lbs, 10 mg - for up to 50 lbs 25 mg. more for over 50 lbs, but we are going to try the 25 mg - to start. Thanks for your help. I will let you know how it works. She can't have been bitten - she's been inside ALL DAY LONG. We do have a few spiders, tho and just maybe one crawled on the carpet and got her. Poor baby.

We have given our 10 lbs Yorkie benadryl on several occasions for skin allergies. She had no problem with one pill and it helps her. Hope you dog gets better soon.

Ann, I've used Bendryl in the past for a golden retriever that got stung by a bee and his snout swelled up. Is Miss SS in any respiratory distress? Don't you hate having a sick pet. I've got an appointment for one of my cats in the AM...he's not acting right and has swollen glands in his neck. He has had every preventative shot available but the poor baby is still under the weather.

She was ill with swollen lymph nodes; was on antibiotics for a week, but a week has passed since she finished them, so it's not that and the vet says she's fine now. We just got her back from the vet Tuesday noon after being boarded since last Wed. She's had the benadryl since I last posted and has no ill effects, but she is not comfortable. I hate it when the pets have a problem because I just can't figure out what the problem is. Babies/children have fevers, pain, they cry - they tell you and you go straightaway to the dr. Pets are a puzzle.

She's had all her shots, too. She's having no trouble breathing - we just don't know what happened. Guess it's back to the vet if she's not better by morning.

Thanks, everybody.

It's not a hotspot or two is it? My bichon has been driving me nuts with a hotspot on her neck. With all her hair I didn't notice it until it was infected, green and oozy. That was five weeks ago and she's had two rounds of antibiotics and has pretty much been on steroids ever since. It heals, it comes back, it heals it comes back. Any advice? She seems itchy all over as well...as soon as I get home and she comes out of the kitchen she rubs her back along the carpet and couch. So I'll be interested in anyone's help as well...she's about 12 pounds so maybe I'll try 10 mg benadryl if I can get her off the steroids. They're turning her into a stoned, drooling fatty.

Maybe she used her nose to try to make an escape. :D Was she on a concrete pad..(boarding)I thinking she tried to open gate, ect..and rubbed her nose...Just a thought....Bonnie

Hi Hens

Just got back from a dog show, which is why I haven't posted for you. You can give Miss SS a benadryl (25) a.m and p.m. I would give them with food. She might be a bit sleepy but they can't do her any harm. If it's a bee sting it will take the swelling down.....albeit slowly. You might also think about compressing her with cold compresses. My leggie girl is currently on banadryl bid for allergies that she gets EVERY July ......

Strawberry.....Along with the benadryl or steriods, whatever your bichon is on, you can put MENNEN"S MEDICATED POWDER on the hot spot. ALSO, if that doesn't work because it's really disgusting, get some GENTOCIN SPRAY from your vet and spray the spot twice daily.....I swear by the spray.

Ev

PS .....Leggie got her first leg in Rally Obedience Novice B today!!!! And I didn't have a clue what I was doing......she's so good to put up with me.

She stopped rubbing her nose on the carpet after the benadry. Then she wanted out so I let her. She ran to and fro on the porch; then decided she wanted to go all the way outside. She RAN loping down the long drive. She refused to come back in. It was cool and damp outside so I left her. She didn't come straight in this morning - till we had one drop of rain. She's been in all day. The swelling is better, but not gone.

I didn't think that maybe she picked up something while boarded at the vet from Wed til Tuesday -

We will watch carefully. I am still worried, tho, because there's still the swelling on each side of her face. Last night she had a huge bag under one eye, but it's gone today.

Thanks, Ev. I know you have done all this and I appreciate your knowledge - everybody else's, too.

Look at her teeth...

Look at her teeth...

Ann,

About a year ago....... our standard poodle, Onyx?s face swelled up.... and then blood started coming out of his eye!! My poor Sara totally freaked!! Of course it was a weekend...... We got a vet to let us take him in. The vet looked at him and acted like it was totally a ?no brainer?. He opened his mouth and said, ?un -hu?... Look here... pointed to one of his teeth and said, "look how the tooth is discolored... sort of the color of a potato. SHOULDN?T BE!!" He said the path of least resistence was for the blood to come out his eye. He ended up pulling the tooth and our sweet Onyx has been fine ever since.

You might check Ms. Sally's teeth.

I checked her teeth and they look ok. Also in recent past, she had swollen throat glands. The vet examined her very well at that time and found nothing at all. He gave her antibiotics for a week.

She is still in the house this morning - She can wait 24 or more hours between outside visits! Never saw that in a dog, but she will go when she's ready. Her neighbor buddy is waiting patiently in the driveway for her to come out to play, but she's just lazing at my feet.

Her swelling is gone! We didn't give her another benadryl because I guess it made her antsy, hence the running the other night. She's lazy and hardly ever runs!

I can relax today, knowing that she's ok again. Well, for today, anyhow.
