I had CT colonography

Yes, it is over! I had it on Friday.

If someone incarcerated somewhere described what I had done to me then their would be an outcry of inhumane treatment.

I had to start a light diet four days before, so on Monday. Very little to eat and extremely limited choice, this was for three days - so hunger. Then Thursday I had to take Picolax twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon and to eat nothing after my very light lunch. The instructions said to stay near to the toilet - in other words camp out in the bathroom!

Then joy of joys, Friday. Strip and put on the delightfully elegant garments. Have a canula inserted in my arm for them to inject dye. Worse was to come, they stuck a wretched tube up my rear end and inflated a balloon then pumped me full of carbon dioxide! Then they did the CT scan.

What fun. For the finale, they removed the canula and of course I kept bleeding. The nurse has now added "Is a bleeder" to my x-ray records!

Its sounds terrible!!! They would have to DRAG me to do that. Hope your doing ok now! Did you have to go off any meds? Were you awake?

I was told to telephone my doctor in a week for the results. All this wouldn't be so bad but all I went to my doctor for was a case of my piles bleeding, something which has happened from time to time over the past forty-three years! I wanted to know if I needed to take antibiotics as a preventative measure since presumably bacterial could enter the bleeding pile. The answer to that was that I didn't need them but then he started saying I had to be checked out to ensure there is nothing else going on.

One benefit from this method rather than the more normal way of examining the 'rear end' is that they scan the blood vessels and various organs at the same time so it is almost like a medical check.

The reason for giving me this type of test was that I didn't need to come off my medication, there is no bleeding (apart from my arm) so the warfarin aspect was fine. Normally they would also administer a muscle relaxant before proceeding but decided not to in view of my heart.

Awake, oh yes you are awake, awake and clenching your buttocks!

They'd have to sedate me for that... seems like they would've anyway. They do for a colonoscopy here..

Sounds like the colonscopy I had, but I was sedated for it. I don't think most people realize they get blown up with carbon dioxide during a regular colonscopy either.

Oh sue.. that sounds horrid! glad it is all over for you!

Mine was done about 20 yrs ago and they just let patients suffer through it. I yelled.

Sue ~ Sorry you had such a terrible experience...hope you are feeling much better now. Luckily, they sedated me when i had a Colonoscopy in July...don't remember a thing about it, except drinking a bottle of liquid every hour on the hour from 1 PM in the afternoon until 4 AM in the middle of the night. Due to paralysis, my system is sluggish and that is why i had to drink so much. That was hard to do since it tasted terrible.

They would normally do a straight colonoscopy here too but my GP thought the CT version would be less invasive, which I am sure it is.

OMG!...you call that less invasive Sue? ...It sounds only minimally less revolting than the full version...Thats a great incentive to keep my colon healthy with fibre and stuff and avoid that procedure altogether.

I hope they find your results are perfectly normal and you were correct in that it was just the 'roids playing up.
