I LIVE IN BUFORD, GA. AND WORK IN ATLANTA, GA
OK, I know I have written about COPS ON COUMADIN in the past. I have complained how my department doesn't listen to the Docs but loes listen to the hype and scare speak about Coumadin. I had a MEDICAL for another MERTO ATLANTA Police Dept on Mpnday. I brought my documentation from my Cardio and Surgeon. Well, long story short, I will be giving a 2 weeks notice to my current employer as soon as my drug test comes back. (I know that will be OK) Their Doc had NO problems with the Surgery, or the Meds.
There IS life after COUMADIN!!!!
PS, 2 weeks should be given on my 8 month valversary.

I'm forever fighting for police officers on Coumadin. Some day, I hope every single one that was denied a position simply because of being on the drug, can sue and win, against those that turned them down.

Yeah, I know....Keep on dreamin.

Congratualtions Sheepdog!!!
Keep hanging in there. Sorry that the police department does'nt realize that we are normal people too. Let us know what your doing and how it going at your new job?
Crystal:)

YEAH SHEEPDOG!!!
Good for you for being proactive and going for something better. I hope your old department realizes what they've lost.

That's great Sheepdog. I had no idea that this was an issue with some employers. I've been working as a career firefighter for years and fortunately it has never been mentioned beyond the initial physical.

Congratulations.

Joe

Very happy for you Sheepdog and wish you the very best. So happy you were proactive and applied elsewhere!

Stay safe!

Joe some of them will retire you immediately or put you on desk jobs. There is no call for it unless you cannot perform the duties of your job. They love to make an issue out Coumadin and bleeding, but the fact is, anything a law enforcement officer or fire fighter might encounter is going to be serious whether or not they are on Coumadin. This is another reason why we are trying to shift peoples terming of "blood thinner" to "anticoagulant" because when you hear "blood thinner" you think of blood running like water and it just isn't like that at all.

I agree with you Ross. When I first went on Coumadin 20 years ago, the doctor told me that I couldn't play most sports, couldn't shave with a razor and would have to be extremely cautious. Although, I wouldn't recommend it to all coumadin users, I shave with a razor, have water skiied, played most sports and have a physical career. I always thought I was breaking all of the rules until I came to this forum.

And they still tell people the same things today. It's never ending and it shouldn't be this way. I don't know about the rest of you, but I had this surgery to save my life. I intend to live it and Coumadin has not once interfered with anything I want to do. Common sense and simple precautions taken, and go live your life. Doctors would have us all in rocking chairs on the front porch if we let them.

Even my internist!

Even my internist!

I remember when I told my DOCTOR that I was gonna have the surgery and be on COUMADIN. He said "It is going to be difficult to be a POLICE OFFICER and be on COUMADIN". My CARDIO, SURGEON and even the URGENT CARE DOC (where I took the Pre-Employment Physical for the new job) never batted an eye. I remember talking to another PRE-EMPLOYMENT DOC (he wouldn't just let me pass because I was "asymptomatic" and that started me down the road to surgery. Probably saved my life) I asked if I had come to him 6 months AFTER the surgery, would he pass me? He said he was unsure about me being "FULLY ANTICOAGULATED". Now, at that time, I did not know about the ON-X and didn't know what an INR of 2.0-2.5 was OR that that would be my magic number. I don't know what he would say now.
It just amazes me that so many PROFESSIONALS that SHOULD know these things, DON'T! Kind of scarry if you ask me.
Oh well, I plan to wear my ALERT bracelet and let the MEDICS at the local fire dept know, just in-case. Noe I can get on with things and NOT worry that the worng somebody may find out.:D:);)
