QAS is now in-network for our insurance company. Previously we had to go through a middle man that the ins. co. considered in-network. All they did was call QAS and order my machine and then my strips when I needed them. Some may recall that they then charged my ins. co over 2.5 x's the retail price of the machine (close to 6K!) and then charged ~$350 for a box of 12 strips. All they would do is call QAS and QAS would send me the strips directly. I could never understand why Empire BC/BS put up with that. When I got my new INRatio they tried to tell me our portion was 10% of almost 6,000 (or 600) I called the middle man company at the time and told them that I'd pay them 10% of the retail price of the machine, so ~$250 and that would be all they'd get from me. They were okay with that because they knew they were screwing BC/BS over the cost of the machine.
And we wonder why insurance coverage is so high. I complained to the top at BC/BS (and got no interest or concern what so ever) and talked to one of the head ted's at Hemosense, who was quite interested in what BC/BS was getting charged for their machine. I recall his comment was "Wow, If I'd known you could get that for the machine, I would have gone into business for myself."
But now QAS is in-network for me and at only a 10% copay, I now pay $12 for a box of strips instead of $35. Maybe Empire BC/BS saw the light. Nah.... probably not.
