On 5-31-03 my niece gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. He died on 6-13-03 of the above congenital heart condition. Given that this has happened within my family and my valve anomaly was also congenital I am wondering if this would suggest that other family members should be screened for heart problems. I am very concerned with the health of her 3 year old daughter. This has been a very difficult time for our family.

Beverly,

I am so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. I am not very familiar about congenital heart defects but my gut feeling is that everyone will need the reassurance of a negative exam for her. If by chance something is uncovered than it can be dealt with in a timely matter.

You and your family are in my prayers and I hope things are smooth for you for a long way to come.

hi bev!
i am so sorry to hear of your loss_ how sad.
i am in agreement with betty in that it would be a good idea to be on the safe side and have your niece's three year old daughter checked.
how is your niece holding up? that poor thing...
wishing you all the best and just know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies at this tragic loss.

I agree that that your niece's daughter should be checked. As you know, most things can be corrected if found in time.

Hi Beverly,

I am so sorry to hear about your family's loss. I have a cousin who lost a baby to the same heart defect after 8 years of trying to get pregnant. This time is going to be hard on your entire family but, it will be especially hard on her. Since she already has one child she will at least have a reason to try and continue to function. She definitely should have her daughter checked out but chances are that since she is three and healthy she is fine. I do not think that anyone is sure if there is a genetic link with this defect. My cousin now has a perfectly healthy, beautiful 7 year old daughter but, the pain of losing that first one is still there. With your families love and support they will get through this.
