I just wanted to let you know that hubby's avr sugery went well on Friday. There was no need for aortic root replacement, which was a bonus. He had his tubes removed this afternoon and went for his first walk. Hoping he'll be home on Tues. Thanks for all of you well wishes.

Great news make sure you get some rest also
and keep us updated....Thanks for this update

Hubby is experiencing fluid in his lungs that he hasn't been able to cough up. Has anyone had this happen, and if so what did they do? I'm going to request a respitory therapist if one isn't scheduled already.

If they gave him a spyrometer (spelling??) then have him do that as often as possible. I did mine at least 5 breaths once an hour when I could. But yes, I would also say that a resp. tech could come by and evaluate him just to be on the safe side. Good Luck. I will pray that things smooth out for you both.:)

+1 on the incentive spirometer. Since he has his chest tubes out (WOO HOO!), he ought to be a lot more mobile and walking is a great way to inflate those lungs and dry them out. While I was in the CCU a respiratory tech came by about every six hours and gave me a breathing treatment with albuterol. Oh how that made me cough, but it helped me get some of the junk out too. . .

Activity and deep breathing are the best things that you can do to clear up the lungs.

Just an update for advice. Hubby's O2 level is okay but not great. He afibed , spelling?, last night which I understand is not unusual. So, I'm told that he may be in for another 2 days, which brings him to 6-7 post-op. Has anyone else experienced this?
