how would i go about getting a prescription for a coaguchek? And how soon after surgery would i be able to get it? I would really like to be able to do the home monitoring myself as it would fit into my lifestyle a lot better to home test then to have to go and get it checked all the time. can anyone give me some information on it. will i need to wait to be released to a cardiologist before i can do it or would i be able to before that?

I believe the 90 days refers to 90 days in-range on warfarin before a machine will be given to you. Home testing rules !

No. I don't think anyone here or ever has been in range all the time for 90 days. I'm fairly sure it's just an insurance requirement for some. I know it is for Social Security.

thanks for the info ross i am sure that it will be very useful. had really thought of this part of it until the other day when i was on here. would be much easier being able to do home testing then have to go to a doc all of the time.

Yes it's a thousand times better then going to a clinic and gives you lots more control over your own care, but many physicians are not easily convinced. See the sticky at the top of the this forum about the video from the experts in the field.

Jax,

My son's Cardiologist filed all of the paper for his ProTime while he was still in the hospital recovering. We had the machine about 6-8 weeks later. Surprisingly, insurance didn't give us too much of a hassle.

who do you have insurance through? i have mine through cigna and so far have never had a problem with them covering anything. hopefully it will be the same for a home monitor because so far the closest clinic to me to have my inr tested is in lorain and that's atleast an hour away.

I currently go 2 hours one way to have inr checks. I have a local (15 mins away) dr who refuses to allow his pts to use home monitoring...thats why I dont go to him anymore. I wait for my approval from insurance, sigh...

Some people have a very hard time. Just be patient and persistent, file appeals if necessary, sooner or later, they'll cover it.
